If you're still having second thoughts about electronic starters, check out this website. It's a VERY informative discussion and quite convincing.

bsmart, remember typical tanning lamp life is 800 hrs, this is due to the UV drop and not to lamp failure. These lamps are designed to run 10,000 hours on normal circuits. The real issue is cost and need. If you are getting starter sticking at ratings above 160W this is a good way to go, if however you are at 160W or below it is an expensive way to fix a problem that you do not have.

I wouldn't recommend anyone use electronic starters in 100W systems or 120W systems for that matter. As you mentioned 160W seems to be the border line and that's why I've installed them in my 160W and 200W units. I plan to monitor lamp life and see what difference it makes. If I get an additional 50 - 100 useful hours out of my lamps, I would say it was a worthwhile investment. Besides, the cost of the electronic starters has fallen to near the price of standard starters now, so it's not a huge investment for a 10 year lifetime part. If you change standard starters every couple years, your out more money in the end.
