there is a white crystal substance that forms on the outside of a high pressure lamp that degrades the output over time, has anyone ever polished one and properly cleaned it and rechecked the output and please this will not effect the safety of the lamp chipppppp.

I have noticed this not only on the outside of the lamp but also on the inside reflective surface of the lamp housing. You can see small scratches and have thought on several occasions that the unit has not been properly cleaned. It would make sense to me that this would degrade the quality of UV being transmitted and reflected.

What is the stuff? Does it mean the lamp is in need of replacing?

Are you talking about HP lamps only, or are you refering to lamps in general?
