Hiring an airbrush technician. Advice?

I am starting my mobile airbrush tanning business and so far the process has been great. I need to hire another person to work for me because I am keeping my current job (it is verrry flexible) and plan on doing this as a side job until it really kicks off. I want to hire a girl because more people are comfortable getting sprayed by a female.

My question is directed at all who have other technicians working for them. What do you pay them? How does something like that work out since it seems like such an independent job? I know it's all unique to the individual and what is negotiated, but I am just trying to get input so I can decide how I am going to work this out.

Re: Hiring an airbrush technician. Advice?

First of all check your state and federal employment laws so that you know legally if you have to hire the person as an employee or an independent contractor. You can't hire a person as an i.c. just because you want to, they have to fit into different categories based on job duties, compensation, etc.

Also....if you hire someone as an i.c. you can't determine the product or equipment they use, the hours they work, etc. you are simply hiring them to finish a job.

That said...if you hire someone to do mobile and have to pay them hourly or salary, you are also going to have to pay employment taxes, get workers comp ins. etc...

Which leads you to the BIG QUESTION I ask everyone who faces this situation....what do you have to charge your clients in order to cover your costs as an employer, make a profit, and for your employee to make a decent wage?
