Newbie with questions

Hi everyone. My name is Terry and I am a newbie.
At the moment I am a stay at home mother of two teenage boy's.
I have an in home business making candles, soaps, glassblock lights and other handcrafted items.
I am wanting to open a store but don't think just on my candles and other items would be worth the overhead.
So I was thinking maybe doing tanning beds with it.
So my question are if anyone can help or email me would be greatly appreciated.
Were would be the best placed to do research?
What would be the best tanning equipment to start out with?
Where is the best place to check into wholesale buying?
Believe me I am not jumping into this but would like to study up on it and just need to know where to start.
Thanks for your help.
Terry

Re: Newbie with questions

Terry you are starting in a good place. You can find tons of information on tantalk. You will have sales people find you here as well and you will hear many completely different opinions. Make sure you use your search option at the top to check on things you are told. Goodluck, if you need any further help just let us know. :)

Re: Newbie with questions

Maybe do a consigment to tanning salons and other shops instead. Keeps your overhead low, but allows you to sell your product at various locations.

Ditto. Consignment can work great! Day spas, tanning salons, etc.

Re: Newbie with questions

Research long and hard.

Currently you are a "stay at home mother of two teenage boys".

Boys that need rides? Need supervision sometimes? Are in their last few years of activities and being home before they slip away into adulthood?

Currently you have 100% flexibility. Work from home, at night, on a weekend, all day - whatever fits.

Open a brick & mortar store - of any kind - and you have a MAJOR commitment. With a tanning salon, it is 363 days/year, minimum of 10-12 hours per day.

75 hours/week minimum - for you to work - or for you to hire someone and trust your "investment" in their hands. For $7/hour?

Expect a MINIMUM investment to be about $100K. Don't be surprised if it gets to $200K - to get something that can be big enough to sustain the overhead necessary to actually make a profit. Some actually spend $300K and more.

Immerse yourself in posts. Go back years - lots of "golden nuggets" out there in the past.

Come back, ask questions. See if this is the BEST way to sell your candles, or if the earlier ideas re. consignment or on ebay or craig's list or an on-line site or renting a booth in a craft fair or any OTHER ways will involve less risk and less commitment - with as good or better return.

Happy researching!
