Ok – NO, I haven’t made a decision on purchasing either salons I was looking at. I have a general question though while looking at existing businesses.
What do you do with the current employees if you don’t want to keep them all? This is hard! For example: At the one salon there are 5 employees: Employee #1 works every weds night (she has been there for over 10 years) and is a school teacher during the day. She makes $14/hr!!!! The only thing I like is she KNOWS the business… Employee #2 works most days mon-fri (has been there about 6 years) she makes $11/hr! But again, KNOWS the salon… Employee #3 was hired recently and is now sharing some days with Emp #2 – making about $7/hr – she will prob be easy to get rid of b/c she is new and doesn’t work a lot of hours and I am sure #2 wants some hours back. Employee #4 works everynight, but weds and wants the weekends too. She is newer, makes $7/hr (I think) and is a very nice person. I don’t think I would want to cut her b/c she works a lot and that takes care of a lot of shifts. Employee #5 works like 1 day a week to cover a shift. Easy cut… What do you think? For any business this is a hard question. What would you do… (NO TALKING ABOUT DON’T BUY THE SALON – THIS WOULD BE FOR ANY BUSINESS I WOULD CONSIDER BUYING) |

Re: Existing Employees
Hard isn't it. Figure out the ones you need and do what you need to do. I had to let go my entire staff when I took over my salon 6 years go. They hated me just for buying the place, so it just wasn't working out.
Do what you need to do, it is what it is.

Re: Existing Employees
Keep either choice 1 or 2. Depending on what hours you want to work, if your wanting to work days then you need the employee that can work nights. Bascially keep the one that will work around your schedule. but pay them what they are worth unfortunatly at this point they know more then you and you need them. Clients like that they are known when they walk threw the door as well, they like knowing who is behind the desk, repor with clients is one of the MOST important factors in a salon. Clients like feeling "important" . Not only do these girls know the salon they know the clients. That is going to work in your favor until you get these clients to know you and like you.
you'd be suprise how many clients just leave the salon because the owner they loved are now gone. keeping those employees happy and liking you is only going to ensure your transition into the new owner alot easier. NOW onto another important subject WTF does my sig line say I love Derf WTH is Derf and I dont know him... let alone love him pifffft Last edited by Mali; 09-10-2007 at 07:43 PM. |

Re: Existing Employees
You may have to clean house regardless of how long they have worked there. Can't always teach an old dog new tricks. It's going to depend on how well they adapt to how you want to run the salon. You can always rehire them under your management and put them on a 30 day probation under you rnew guidelines and see how it turns out.

Re: Existing Employees
yea, its crazy. she has been there for over 10 years, I guess the raises were pretty nice. I know I was at a salon and my pay was capped at $7!! under the table, but I was there b/c I liked the clients, the job and the tanning - so I didnt care abotu the money (it was fun money)
