No not really, if you read some of my past posts, I actually told him/others that I am/do not disparage his knowledge at all. It's just that I don't agree with everything that's said, and a lot of the posts are very contradictory. You might want to read a few of them and you can clearly see how two or three different things are being said that contradict one another. Everyone is an expert,,,,,,Right????? |

Re: Importance of Advertising
What I took from Steve's suggestion was offering something short term that is too good to pass up and then either upgrade them to something better or sell them on your normal promos or specials once they come in. I know it's a bad word here but Sunsally offered a free tanning weekend not too long ago and hit a home run. Of course, she had to advertise that and she put the free tan weekend in the ad. After she got them in the door she sold them on her regular packages. Why does everyone take Steve's advice and tear it apart. He's just trying to help. If you don't agree than don't do it, but I would like to hear anything he has to say so you think maybe you guys could lay off so he doesn't stop posting?

Re: Importance of Advertising
FTW (IMO) will work in large market. Has anyone in a small market (25,000 population or less) had good results with a FTW?
Marketing and advertising both have to be tailored to your situation. I had a radio ad saleperson come by the salon cold calling for ads. (Possibly one of the worst jobs on the planet.) She is cute, bubbly, all excited about her service that she is selling (obviously new, even if you didn't have her boss trailing along 3 ft. behind her.) We were in between rushes and she was really excited about what she had to say, so I did something I usually don't do. I let her give me her sales pitch. (I figured this had to be no more than her 2nd day. I hated to make her cry.) When she showed me her coverage map, I couldn't help but laugh. She shows me this big coverage map with an ellipse drawn on it showing their draw area. We were on the line! Why would I pay for your ads when 98% of your listeners are outside my market? What Steve says makes sense if your market demands it. All I'm saying is, I don't think it makes sense in my market. I have 1 real competitor. Others are a couple of beds here, 2 or 3 there, etc. in the back of some other type of business. We have 18,000 people in the city and a total of 40,000 in the county. I am on the 2nd highest traffic road in the county. I have been here for 10 years. You have to advertise. It is a question of what type of advertising has the highest ROI. Had a new customer yesterday that hasn't been tanning in several years. Just changed jobs and now has the time. She was at the gym and made a comment that she was going to start tanning and was inquiring about my main comp. Another person working out overheard her and spoke up. Told her she should come to my place and that she would get a lot better deal for her money. That cost me a free session to the guy that sent her (if she can find him again and ask his name. She couldn't even remember his name!) |
