Re: Importance of Advertising

Just to be clear, IMO, for a small salon (less than 20 beds), conventional advertising is a waste of money, or at best, a high investment with a low percentage ROI.

Best advertising for a small business like this is:

Proper location
Excellent, highly visible signage
one on one interaction with prospective customers
properly placed free session cards that you use to entice these prospective customers to visit your salon
word of mouth advertising from existing clientele (use above mentioned free session card techniques to give current clientele an incentive to sell your business.)

pretty much something like that... it took a lot of planning to make sure everything was legit and would work. it saves me multiple thousands of dollars each year.

Cross Marketing is good and usually NO COST! Go put your "Advertising Box" at every Hair, Nail, Color Salon in town, as well as any other "Like Kind" Business. Costs nothing, and you will most likely not make a killing on it, but it's free advertising. Imagine how many customers come in a very nice salon on a monthly basis. Now imagine that ONE (1) of those customers comes in your spot and spends $100 from one of your ads. WOW-What a nice profit huh!

Never try to make a sale with your advertising, the advertising should be designed to get them into the store. The sale is made at the counter. Always offer a special that is to good to pass up. Be aggressive with your advertising, it will pay off.

Not sure I agree with this one 100%. I mean, if you're gonna spend the money to do the advertising, why not BLAST your great deals out there as well. Yes, I agree, the sale comes once they walk in. That is what I tell everyone that works for me, "I will get them to the door, but it's your job to MAKE THE SALE" There's a difference in making the sale and advertising, these are two totally different animals.
Again you miss the point. When you advertise you must offer a deal that will make all tanners respond. The sale of all of your services and products are made after the tanner is in your salon and can see what makes you different from other salons.

Advertising budget should be at least 10% of your gross sales

Hey Genius,,,in your psot you say "don't try to make sale in your advertising" and now you say to "give them a deal that they can't pass up".

Make up your mind already!

Huh? Who said anything about "everything"? I just pointed out the discrepancy in the earlier post.
