Brandy1 - there's not one tanning salon within a 10 mile radius....someone will be putting one in & it might as well be ME, so relax girl! BUT, thanks for the advice anyway....

In reading Brandy and Sherin's posts I guess we all just have to assume that they and all other salon owners are about to go broke and fold up OR only existing tanning salons will do any business in the future. Any new salon will surely fail simply because tanners will see it as the "one too many" in the business. I thought this site was here to encourage the entreprenourial spirit? To help new salon owners? Thanks for the discouragement you two!

It is a fact that there are too many salons in an already saturated market.
In my own case, things were going rather well until a moron didn't do his homework and built 1 block away. He has lesser equipment, but has managed to take away a few bottom feeders, which has made us squeak by.. It doesn't take much and I refuse to reduce the tanning to 9.95 a month unlimited. That coupled with the unstopable flow of diverted products online has hurt the industry and again reduced my bottom line.

The problem is that new owners don't see the reality until it's too late, spend their money and are locked in to a loosing situation. This is not sour grapes, but a reality check.

An NO, I'm not here to encourage you and make life all better... You'll find out soon enough.

Entreprenurial Spirit? Meh.

I agree. Don't let a foolish dream send you to the poor house. I haven't seen a "good" year since 2004.

Re: Texas Newbie - which beds to buy???

Wells Fargo did a survey using US Census data and concluded that 50% of all business startups fail in the first 5 years.

The NFIB estimates that approximately 40% of all businesses are profitable over the lifetime of the business.

The US bureau of Labor and Statistics say, "The data show that, across sectors, 66 percent of new establishments were still in existence 2 years after their birth, and 44 percent were still in existence 4 years after.

Re: Texas Newbie - which beds to buy???

These are figures for all businesses. Think a minute. If you are going to go into business, pick a business that has a better than average chance of success. the odds are bad enough for any business.

I'm not here to encourage you. Why on earth would you think that? I'm here to tell the truth. And if the truth hurts....well... And if you really read all the posts to educate yourself here, then you would know that the past 3 years have gotten worse and worse for this business and that there are still people opening in saturated markets. I'm not going to fluff up things to make you feel better about spending a ton of money. Or myself for that matter. But in business and not just the tanning business *read slowly if you need to* you need to be smart about opening a business. Anybody who opens a salon in an area where there are 12 other salons in a 1 mile radius in a town of less than 50,000 with medium income levels is a moron. They deserve to lose their money. And newowner, I was not referring your YOUR situation alone. It could be that where you are opening and what you are doing is a smart move, how the **** do I know. So don't take things so **** personally.
