I do plan on working it as much as my time allows. Right now the girls are scheduled in for the month. I understand that it is my business and I can take their work time away from them. I would rather not have to do that. I can live with breaking even right now. I make enough with my other job to fortunately do that.
This salon currently has 6 Sunvision Pro 24S, 3 Sunvision Pro LE 2F, 2 Sunvision ZX 30 3F, 1 Sundome XL 48. It is a really nice place, it just needs some work to it. There are currently 3000 on the mailing list and not a whole lot of competition around. The lady I bought this from has a lot on her plate besides her other 2 tanning salons: other businesses, real estate, pregnancy/ she is trying to unload some of her workload and this tanning salon that I am buying she didn't work it, promote or anything. It worked itself.... I hope this helps a little bit. I really do appreciate the suggestions from all of you. |

Re: Brand New Owner with Questions!!!!!!
First of all - congratulations!
Now...as for suggestions.... Not sure where you are located, but the first thing you should know is that, for MOST markets, your equipment is REALLY seriously uncompetitive! Other than the Sundome, everything else is basically a Level 1, base bed. In fact, your 6 24 lamp Level 1 beds are really more like a home bed -- not salon quality or results. So.... that may be playing a great deal into why it isn't making money so far! A couple of questions.... 1. How far away are her other two salons? Same market/town or different? Because if they are in the same town (or close), you may find that many of "her" customers just move to one of "her" other salons to be loyal. 2. Who else is in your market? What kind of equipment do they have? Time to do some professional competitive analysis if you didn't before you bought! You need to know their pricing, equipment, specials, hours etc to figure out if you are even in the ballgame right now. 3. Heed EVERYONE'S advice and get smart about your business REALLY quickly! Keeping on a bunch of "her" employees (who may still be loyal to her and direct clients there, or keep her posted on how you are doing...), may seem like a godsend right now, and maybe it is, but the bottom line is you have NO idea how much - if at all - they are cheating you or helping you at the moment. Tanning is a cash business with more ways to be dishonest than honest --- and employees figure that out! Drop in unannounced, audit their work, and think SERIOUSLY of investing in cameras behind the counter (for "shoplifting" and "security" reasons of course as far as you'll tell your employees) and plan on spending some time watching them in action! They should be selling, cleaning, and NOT doing any monkey business of tanning folks for free, upgrading them for free, etc.. 4. Start reading these threads. There is a TREASURE TROVE of information available to you here. Start digging in, and plan on making it your only free time for the next month. Skip the "drama" threads (there are plenty), but dig in and skim and take notes! That'll get you started. Good luck --- this can be a very exciting business or a financially deadly one. Hope you have what it takes to make it profitable! |

Re: Brand New Owner with Questions!!!!!!
I am located in a suburb of Chicago. Her other two salons are about twenty miles away each. Most of her customers at this salon don't know who she is because she has never worked the salon. Her other two are extremely successful and those as well as her other businesses take up her time. She hasn't worked this salon one day in the past year besides overseeing some things. I took it off her hands for 60K. There isn't another "real" salon around this one for about a twenty mile radius. I am hiring two of my own employees but one of her's will remain. The equipment I was told is only two-three years old which I am assuming is ok. There are 6 buck boosters installed. If this equipment isn't very competitive, is there a way to make it competitive? Thanks for your post sunsally, it was very informative. I just want this to be positive cash flow really. I am not looking to get rich off of this salon. I have a great job already and some other gigs going on.
