Re: Does Your Old Salon Need Help?
[quote=Steve Underhill]Yes I have attended more marketing classes than you can imagine. I have also taught marketing classes. I come from the school of acting instead of reacting, leading instead of following. It is important to stay on top of industry trends. But every salon coming into your market should not require change on your part if you are aware of what will make you successful based on current industry trends. If I must do something to survive because a new salon is coming in than I should have probably been doing it already. I am sure your way of waiting to see what the competition is doing and reacting is working very well for you. I believe in a very different program for success. I much prefer that other salons are reacting to what my salons do. Of coarse there are many, many things that you must be doing that are too numerous to list here. To wait to do something that you should already be doing until the competition is doing it is not real solid advice.[/quote
thanks Al Gore, man what a politician. Look at all of these vague answers. It has nothing to do with "not doing what you should have been doing". You can be right on, 100% solid in marketing, equipment, personell, etc. etc., but what do you do when the "new guy" comes around with a wad of cash and double your size and beds? Huh? There's more to it than just doing what "you think is right". People are fickle, and they will check out the new guy, NO MATTER WHAT. Basic Business Sense. Taking a few marketing courses is nowwhere close to a true education in business. Do you know how may "courses I have takn over the years"? I would never claim to be an expert because of this. SIMPLE PREMISE HERE.......Adapt, Change Constantly, Don't use or be the status quoe. You will have to make changes throughout the years. Why do you think all pharmacies always open across the street from one another? To cause change and confusion among the guys who have been there for a long time. Make them do things that they normally would not do, thus making mistakes. The trick is to be a champion of change, when need be, and learn how to do it flawlessly..... |

A large chain or franchise evaluates a location based on demographics potential growth and statistics, not because they want to make it hard on existing businesses. Existing businesses failing is a byproduct of change. Business that are aware of their industry and market are changing as needed. These business do not fail because of the new business in town. We get so caught up in our own little world that it takes an outside source to identify needed change. Here is an email i Just received from a client that I assisted with the purchase and change of an existing salon. Quote ( Hey Stephen, Haven't talked to you in a while. I just wanted to let you know I just completed my 2nd fiscal year and I wanted to give you my totals. I am still learning so much and feel like I still have so much to learn but I am very happy to report that we are definitely the biggest and nicest salon in town now thanks to you. The year before I bought the salon they grossed 150,000, my first year I grossed 200,000 and this second year I grossed 290,000. My goal for next year is probably 400,000. I still have a lot of tweaking to do so that I can keep more of the money but I am working on it. My busiest day we tanned 440 tanners this year. Last years highest was 371. Our efts reached 17,000 per month this year! They were only like 3000.00 or so when I purchased the salon. Thanks, Carmen The guy that owned it did not know how to save it, I did. |

I'll Bite! Steve, what do you suggest to a person who has been struglling for months on a logo and is holding up moving the business forward because signs are not put up and advertising has been put on halt because an awesome logo has not yet been produced.

Re: Does Your Old Salon Need Help?
How about a new business in a freaky old money town with population under 2000 and most of them 50 and older. Down from 44 tanners to 10 and all other equipment setting idle.

Bella, before you changed your avatar you were standing in front of palm trees on the wall. Were those painted or sticker type decals. They were pretty and so real looking, I just wondered.

Re: Does Your Old Salon Need Help?
didn't mean to say that was the only reason, and I didn't say "to make it hard". Quite simpled, when Walgreens opens on 15th street, CVS has already let them do all of the due dilligence for them, so they just "slide right in beside them". There is obviously a lot more to it than just that, but you get the premise.
Enough Said, I'm tired of gabbing about this. |

Re: Does Your Old Salon Need Help?
Exactly! It's sink or swim for me. Either I find the right click or I sell out already!
