I second that - get an atty to draw a contract. $2,000 is peace of mind - as well as a covered *** - also know that your *** will not be completely covered.

Employment taxes follow the business - not the previous owner - make sure those have been paid.

Every decision you make in business will have a positive or negative effect, no decision has a neutral effect. If you decide to not do something that you should be doing it will have a negative effect 100% of the time. To insure you are making the correct decisions, get qualified help. You will always be more successful.

Re: The Dream and Struggles of Opening a New Salon

I just wanted to share a letter I received today.

May 23, 2007

StephenUnderhillSMU Consulting & Equipment Sales 5513 Baton Rouge BlvdFrisco, TX75035

Dearest Stephen,

My salon has now been open for 60 days and we are the talk of the town! I would not be in this position if it had not been for SMU Consulting! The best way I could summarize how valuable your services are to me is by using a well known commercial:

Tanning Equipment: $108,000.00
Buildout Expense: $50,000.00
Other Expense: $25,000.00
Stephen Underhill’s Consulting: PRICELESS

Without your services, it would not have mattered how much or how little I would have spent on everything else to start up the tanning salon as I would not have had the vital information that is necessary to make it a success.

As you know, I attempted to obtain an SBA loan for a tanning salon a few years ago and was turned down by three banks. Two years later, after hiring your consulting firm and following your advice, I was approved by the first bank that I submitted the business plan to.

There is an overwhelming amount of tanning equipment out there, especially for someone that is new to the industry. Your expertise proved once again to be PRICELESS. Having the right mix of equipment and equipment that is designed to last and is backed by great customer service is invaluable.

I could go on and on about how many hours and dollars your consulting firm has saved me. It is so nice to know that I have a strong, invaluable source standing behind me and my salon. I would have it no other way!

If at anytime, I could be a reference for your company, it would, without a doubt, be my pleasure to recommend your services.

Sincerely,
ds

Danita Sauerwein,
Australian Sands Tanning Resort

This is what you hear from my clients, I will be happy to let you contact any of my clients.

Thats great on what you have done for them, but please answer this question for me.

Why you never post anything until its time to do advertising for your services? Im not trying to pick on ya but w/your knowledge you should post more instead of trying to use free or lowcost avenues to advertise your service.

(*the post is not views of anyone else nor views of tantalk)

Re: The Dream and Struggles of Opening a New Salon

There are times that I wish I'd hired a consultant, it took alot longer to get things running smoothly (for the most part) than I had anticipated.

Success in this industry is not just based on the quality of what you do, you must also market and advertise. Just like a mailer that a salon might send out, it is important for me or any of the advertisers on these sites to do just that. There is so much concern as to whether a consultant can really help, this is just showing some verification that a good consultant can make all of the difference. I do share on these sites when I have time, however My job is to create successful salons and to fix failing salons. My services are available to anyone that realizes the value of those services. I can't give everything away free anymore that a salon owner can give all of their services free. I provide free demographics and floor plans and a lot of free valuable information. The rest is available when you become a client.

probably two years to learn how to write a business plan.

FYI-99% of Bank out there do not like to loan money for tanning salons, PERIOD! It's just one of those things.

You should work on a relationship with a bank, meaning, your assests, checking, savings, etc. etc. in there, get a few small loans from them, then you will be surprised at what they will give you!
