Are you talking about the Shields area? If so, everyone seems to go over to Tittabawasse and Bay Rd. area. If you can find a place over by SVSC or Delta you might do better with all the college kids over there. But than again the rent for any building over there will kill you with having only 5 units.

Re: Thinking about opening new tanning salon

Tiffany noone can answer those questions. we never know. day to day. some days are great other suck. and it changes. we compare our info to our last year numbers are they are different.

So it is impossible for anyone to be able to tell you what YOUR salon will do, when we don't know what OUR salons are gonna do.

my only words of wisdom to you would be. Open a salon if it is your life long dream, and not your main source of income.

Good Luck.

In other words, if you are looking for an expensive hobby and have the income to pay for it, by all means, open a 5 or 7 bed salon.

Re: Thinking about opening new tanning salon

Thanks for some real answers. I've pretty much decided that I am going to go ahead with this, it wouldn't be our only source of income.

I guess no one has experience in leasing beds, so I'll just have to try to do some more research there.

oh yeah, I am talking about the freeland area

Re: Thinking about opening new tanning salon

What do you mean by leasing equipment so you can upgrade every couple years explain. 5 beds is a small salon not a lot of upgrade options typically they don't do well.

Re: Thinking about opening new tanning salon

Tiffany. with only a pop of 7,000. I'd think a 7 bed set up would be good. you need upgrades for sure.
maybe 4 20 minute beds 2 12 minute beds and a stand up.
You could even think about doing 4 20 minutes, 1 15 minute, 1 12 minute and a stand up. giving you 4 levels and a wider range of pricing. if you couldn't afford that depending on the age and income of the area, drop 2 of the 20 minute beds. with a pop of only 7,000 you'd need to narrow it down to race, age and income to figure out how many of those 7k are likely to tan. my guess would be around 4500 potential tanners at best, meaning extend your hours, have less equipment with more choices and you may work something out.

Re: Thinking about opening new tanning salon

7000 population, about 10-12% of the population tan. 700-840 potential customers. You would need free rent, cheap electric and work the salon yourself all day every day to survive. If you really want to get in to this business, find a better location and talk to Steve Underhill, he is an advertiser on this website.

Re: Thinking about opening new tanning salon

It depends. Run demographics. You need to know what your target market is thats for sure. a 7,000 population is not good, but it could be ok depending on the age, race and income.

Find out for your area, age, race, income, major employers ( job opp). and let us know..... we can go from there.
