Re: bed utilization??

I've had my salon open for 2 years, if you are looking for the busiest months, that is a different story. April is my busiest month, October is my slowest. I would start advertising in mid summer and back off in January, because then is when you need specials to get people to come in the most. I would say that my bed utilization depends on peoples pocketbooks, if they want to spend more, my higher beds get used. If they are feeling strapped, they buy the lower package. I haven't done as well with my MagicTan as I was told, but I do OK, I would never pull it out. Good Luck!

Re: bed utilization??

I think we have to be careful about telling everyone to buy an existing salon because the market is saturated - I think that depends on your location. From what I've read and researched, many of the other areas of the country might be saturated, but here in the midwest, we are still catching up (as we are always behind on all of the trends.)

Where I am at, there are not many salons around at all and the demographic analysis supports an additional salon - I've seen that from other owners on this site in Iowa and Wisconsin.

Not sure where New Tan is at, but I keep seeing comments about over-saturation - I really think that depends on where you are at in the country. JMHO

Re: bed utilization??

Our market is definitely saturated however the location we are going into is an old section of town that is redeveloping so that particular area is untouched so far. We have a clause in our lease that the developer not only give us exclusivity in that strip but any other strip they develop with-in a three mile radius of us. So much of being successful is location, location, location so why would I want to buy a struggling store since it is probably like that because of it's location. If I had a large chain with an already established brand maybe but not when I am starting with one location and just begining my brand.

Re: bed utilization??

I am not a sales rep that works for TanAmerica. I am a Business Consultant that specializes in Tanning Salons. As part of my services I must offer a line of tanning equipment. I chose TanAmerica because of their level of customer service and the quality and performance of their equipment fits perfectly with my proven successful plans and programs. Most sales reps have never owned a tanning salon. These are my qualifications, as can be seen on my web site.

·Owned and operated 14 tanning salons in Dallas, Texas
·Owned and operated one of the largest tanning equipment and supplies distributing company in the US (Southern Exposure)
·Distributed 10 different lines of tanning equipment
·Developed and marketed a private line of lamps and lotions
·Founder and President of Texas Tanning Association, later to become the National Tanning Association
·Introduced automatic debit to the tanning industry through the NTA, later to become Electronic Funds Transfer
·Creator and Author of Tanning For Profit, Tanning For Profit the PowerTan Edition, Tanning Today, Value Plus and Toning & Tanning Today the four most successful marketing programs in the industry
·Featured speaker, teaching Tanning For Profit seminars at tanning trade shows and for large chains of tanning salons
·National Sales Manager for puretan International Inc. a tanning equipment manufacturing company for 12 years
·Owner of SMU Consulting and Equipment Sales
