Re: Flooring
We have both tile and the floating laminate wood flooring. The tile is very durable and easy to clean. Sealing all the grout lines is a little agravating. The wood flooring is very warm feeling, but we can only wet "Swiffer" it. You can't use a regular wet mop because it causes water to get pushed down between the seams and underneath the flooring. I also noticed that when the wood flooring drys, it leaves water spots. One of my employees suggested I buff it up with some Pledge furniture polish. I don't think so - it would be so slippery!!! Knowing that wood flooring scratches easily, we put felt pads underneath our beds so that we could easily move them to clean & vacuum. However, this makes it easier for a customer to lean against the bed and push it into the wall. Eeek! The wood flooring installs quicker than tile and isn't as much of a messy project. That all being said - I think tile is the way to go or that stained concrete.

Re: Flooring
We received a quote for stained concrete and it was $6-$7/square foot. Well, with 1851 square feet, that definitely didn't fit into our budget!! We are starting with new concrete (the retail space is new) so we don't have to do any prep on the floors. From the pics on summerbreeze, it looks a bit arduous to prep the floors.
So we'll be doing the floors ourselves - we're adventurous!! We know a flooring guy and he said we could definitely do ourselves. I searched the web and there are some sites that will provide good instructions. I think when it's all said and done, it will only cost about $500 to stain the floors. BUT, I'll have to let you know how it turns out once we're done! ![]() |

Re: Flooring
We haven't started our floors yet - we were hoping to this weekend but the heating guys will be in there so we have to wait until they're out. So next week we should be able to get in there to do it. I'm so excited - I picked up the colors yesterday and they are beautiful! Malay Tan is the base - it looks like you're walking on sand, and then I'll swirl in some Cola to give it dimension.
I will definitely attach some pics when it's complete!! |

lucky for you-you are starting with new cement - we had to pull up carpet and chemically remove the carpet glue - and sand off the excess! NASTY MESSY you will have a much easier time of it - no prep |

Re: Flooring
I recently visisted a salon with stained concrete...it looked awesome. Our space we are getting currently has carpet...would it be a huge pain to tear it up and stain the concrete? Can you even do that?! And what kind of stain? I don't really understand the whole concept....??

Re: Flooring
asymens - check out www.summerbreezetan.com and click their link that shows you the build out pictures. They ripped up their carpet and stained the concrete. It's a bit of a process, but I think if you or someone close to you is 'handy' you could probably do it.
There are a few web sites that provide good instruction on floor prep. Google "acid stained concrete" and you should be able to find some sites that provide instruction. Once you tear off the carpet, you'll have to strip all of the glue off and then buff the concrete to 'open up the pores'. You should be able to rent the machines to do it. Once the concrete has been prepped and ready to accept the stain, you apply the acid stain (which you can see if there are any concrete flooring specialists in your area - they will have colors to choose) with a regular garden pump sprayer, wash off the residue with baking powder and water, and then seal it with a concrete sealer. Go the route of doing it yourself or having some friends/family help you. It will be SO much cheaper. We are using 2 colors, we have 1848 sq feet, so we got 5 gallons of the base coat, 2 gallons of accent color, and 5 gallons of sealer. Total price was $672. I can't wait to do it - I think it's going to look great! |

Re: Flooring
Thanks bodyglow. I will def. check out those sites. It sounds like it wouldn't be that expensive and it wouldn't cost that much. It seems like a really cool idea that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Thanks for the info, and the websites!!!
