Re: Serious Question, not a Joke...

A man of color came in the other day at shift change and asked to tan...my tech looked at me (like saying...what the **** do I say?) so I seen she was stepping on her bottom lip...and so I jumped in to help her out ...First of all ...as with anyone ...I always start out by asking and what do we wish to achieve today? Or what are your plans?? Are you in a wedding?? AND then they start chirping.... my Back hurts! Timetable to attain a certain tan! Clear my face up!

Do you have those thingees to whiten my teeth??? was his question.....BINGO.....we sure do...so we started him out on a regimine per the manufactures instructions...he wished not to tan so he wore his clothes...all went well ....he has an awesome set of choppers (not motorcycles..lol) and they are beautiful and white now...

Always remember black skin burns as we all do...All need to be treated and skin typed just as any tanner...

IMHO...DO NOT hide behind the scenes...you are NOT a janitor (although us salon owners do it all because we can't hire anyone that does it as good as us anyway...lol) so yes we even clean our own salons... Smart Tan or N.T.T.I. classes and read...read...read...and learn all you can...the thing I learned the most over the years and this goes for the post ^^ about the overweight tech...she may not be able to wear all the cute little outfits you may sell in your salon...BUT if she can SELL...she is my kinda gal...I don't want cutsee's that won't get out from behind the counter or walk you to your room and wait on you hand and foot...We all need Salespersons...

All of us of any color can learn what the ingredients and benefits of lotions are...I say if you want it and it's your Dream..... Stop dreaming and start working toward your goals...You Will Be Just FINE!!!

Best of Luck.... Soo

Re: Serious Question, not a Joke...

Pure Tan, I think your main obsticle will be the initial reaction you will get from new people. As a man who works my salon occasionally, I see a reaction from about every 10th new person (reacting to seeing a man behind the desk). I usually work with my wife (she's afraid of the computer), I run the computer and she cleans the beds. I have people who come in and will look at and talk to her, even though she's not setting at the computer. This reaction will probably be multiplied for your, being black. This reaction is easily overcome by being as friendly and helpful as possible. Once they get to know you, you shouldn't have a problem. Just acknowledge that people have fears, be able to read those people and respond appropriately. Keep your attitude and appearance as friendly and nonthreatening as possible (people have fears and stereotypes whether we like it or not)

Maybe there's a way of marketing your color to your advantage?

Re: Serious Question, not a Joke...

I could be mistaken, but I think their are some tanning salons owned by 2 black men in Phoenix Az. It was profiled in 1 of the trade magazines a while ago.

If possible try and locate other blacks in the business for their advice and perspective.
