Re: to franchise or not?

Yeah, in West Edmonton Mall, nice thing is theres no competition in the mall.
Cost per Sq Ft is too high to open just a salon, but when you buy 40,000 sq ft for a gym, it gets a lot cheaper....

I have clients that do as much as 60,000 per month. Depending on your market and when you open $17,000 for your first month is not unusual.

Re: to franchise or not?

Ok so for the most part it sounds like franchising is out......if anyone who is in a franchise and is successful feels its the way to go...please please contact me.....if I should go on my own then i need to hire a consultant or someone who can get me up and running. I have no doubt I can run my own place once Im up n going. Any suggestions???

Re: to franchise or not?

As a thought - I've spent a good amount of time researching a number of franchises from Tan Co, Desert Sun, Planet Beach etc to determine their value versus being independent.

The more I research - the more I believe that "anything that franchise x can do .. " I can do just as well or better, and with greater flexibility.

Re: to franchise or not?

I agree with the franchising issues, you need to be careful.
However IF you have business skills and want to skip reinventing the wheel You may find that the right franchise could really speed up the process and in the end you'll be much further ahead than being another Ma and Pa shop. Depends on how big you want to grow and what your skills are going into either situation. ;)

Re: to franchise or not?

i own a franchise, love it. we are 152 locations strong. we have a great support network which provides us with almost anything we need. having this many studios helps our buying power which keeps costs low.

eventhough i pay royalties each month what i get from being apart of the Fabutan team more then pays for itself.

now i do know of another local franchise in canada which i wouldnt touch with a 10ft pole, just do your research and talk to other frachisee's about their feelings towards the franchise.

Re: to franchise or not?

I like the independant world, sometimes I wish I had the support from a franchise.. but right now, the fact that I am not a franchise isnt whats keeping me from having 17000 people... noone knows I am here yet.. word just hasnt gotten out, and the fact that I have a name.. like planet beach, fabutan, or executive tan, wont get the word out. Because the franchises advertise the BRAND... not the locations... so still noone would know I am here yet.
