Not necessarily. Is that small town the largest town in a county or just a small suburb?

My town only has about 6000 people in it, but we are the county seat (rural MS). So, we also serve the entire county and the fringes of all the neighboring counties. So, we have plenty of potential customers.

Re: How low is low?

About the town and demographics....
The town is not the largest in the county but the county spreads out over near.y 900 square miles with a total population of 48k. In this particular town, there is a community college and the total population for the town is about 5K. However, there are no other towns for about 12 miles and when the salon opened and was doing well for itself and growing, it was actually drawing in people from the two nearest surrounding towns in addition to its own demo. The best thing about that is that one of those towns is the largest in the county with several tanning salons available. However, people would make the 10-15min drive to this salon to save on waiting time and price. So really, it is difficult to give you an exact demo break down because those things can be considered into the equation. But if you just want this town, I figured a potential market of 1132 people.

Now... all of you experienced vets who say that demo is too small and you want us to start big have to understand that even small towns still tan. Especially in this area where we are lacking in anything that remotely resembles the big city. And when those people are ready to tan, they will go where they feel they get the best service. So don't tell me that the demo is too small, the original owner opened and we increasing growth each year until the current owner took over and halfed the profits and gross sales for the past year. You don't have to have 150K wrapped up in 10-12 beds and stand ups to get a great salon opened and running in these parts. In fact, if you did you would only lose because the demo won't support that. I am working with what I have for demo, trying to meet the need of the town in a reasonable way. Who knows, I could someday chain out to the next neighboring town that has ZERO tanning salons. But, that is in the future....
