Demographics

I'm considering opening a tanning salon and can imagine what the demographic profile is for a typical tanning salon client, but would be better self-assured if someone could point me to some hard facts. Any ideas where I can find tanning salon client demographics?

Re: Demographics

I'm not sure one can find accurate "tanning salon client demographics" for a specific town/city. The easiest way to obtain general information about where you live is by visiting your local Chamber Of Commerce web page.

Re: Demographics

I'm not looking for tanning salon demographics for a specific town/city. I'm looking for the target market for this industry. I'm looking for studies/surveys showing the demographic profile of people who use this service.

You see, I live in South Florida, which is densly populated with a wide variety of demographics. I can lease down the road in the high-rent area with nearby luxury condominiums and homes with people who have high incomes and with kids who have too much money and too much time or I can go 5 miles and have a completely different demographic makeup. So, my question is...where is the sweetspot in the target market. Is it the 20 year old rich college kids or is it the 25 year old gym rats or is it the 35 year old single female with a decent career?

In my mind, it's the single female in their late 20's or early 30's, but I'm looking for some validation.

Obviously location is the key in terms of visibility and traffic, but in the end, it's the demographics of that site which will make or break you. The lessor should provide the demographics for locations I'm looking at, but I need to know the sweetspot of the target market.

You can learn a lot by searching the threads on this site. Tons of good info. Just ignore the nonsense posts (as in any forum you have to take the good with the bad).

Re: Demographics

I have designed a specific Tanning Salon Demographic report that reflects only the information that is important for evaluating a location. The demographics on this report are the most current and accurate available.

Published industry analysis suggests that a typical tanning customer profile is white, between the age of 18 and 44, from an average household income of 50K+, living within a 3 mile radius of the salon.

This profile holds up against our database and I've tested this profile on this board. In general the female to male ratio is 70%/30% but the male % seems to be on the rise, so don't neglect males in your advertising.

I wouldn't trust the landlord for demographics, I seen demographics that are padded to make locations "look" better, landlords have a self interest here.

I posted a demographic tutorial somewhere on this board to obtain demographics for free, so don't pay someone for them. There is a ton a great in information squirreled away in the archives of boards like this so spend some time with the search link located at the top of the page.
Good Luck.

Tom
