Please help......Every location I am looking at to start up my salon is only equipped with a 200amp meter. The entire building is only a 400amp. My electrician is telling me that in order to bring the 400amps to my spot, I will need to tear up the road and upgrade the entire building to a 600amp, put a pad-mounted transformer and bring the power in costing 10-20k in which the building owner will not do.....Is this a typical situation? I cant understand why the electric company cant just run another 400amp line directly to my space....

And that is why you are not an electrical engineer...lol
Electrical and AC are two of the highest cost items you will have in opening a salon if what is required is not already present in the location. If the location you are looking at is a great location the expense could be worth it IMO. Actually it is my belief that you should not open in a mediocre location just because it is cheaper. In most cases you will never be able to maximize the potential of the business in sub-par space. JMO |

Your electrician is correct. The electrical company will need to bring in the upgrade to your unit. Depending on the laws they have there, they should have means to upgrade just your space but it will cost you a bunch. It all depends on the surrounding electrical and transformers from a hub. Good Luck!!

Ditto, ditto & ditto.
If you want to find the power already there, look for a former restaurant or other big power users (although they will have their own issues...). If it isn't at the "buiding" yet, it's going to cost you a lot. But even with that, in tanning, it isn't usual (depending on how many beds of course) for the electrical alone to be 20-25K. And that is with it already at the building, just maybe adding a panel and running the wiring! |

Just to switch out an existing panel to 200 amps and adding a second 200 amp 200 ft from the transformer it cost me around 20k. But the whole location, location, location was the motivator.

Re: Need more electricity
I have to upgrade my 200 amp service to a 600 amp service, they said it will cost around $40,000!! Is this worth it? It's an excellant location, and I am pretty much stuck there. Do you think if I called APS (the electric supply company) they might pay for the panel because I will be paying so much for the electricity every month wouldn't that be a good investment for them?
