I am looking to purchase an existing salon (so I may be a sucker). The current owner claims only 15-20 hrs/week for a 7 bed salon.

How realistic is this?

More like every waking moment! Unless you plan on being an absentee owner thats pretty unrealistic.

Yeah, keep on dreaming. Island Glow is right. Your head will constantly be buzzing with different promos, ideas, problems, etc. I suggest you get a better grip on this industry before jumping in with both feet!

So how can one owner own 4-5 locations if they all take 40+ hours per week (as several people on this site claim)? There are also many absentee owners, some must be successful (which would imply that it is possible), no?

Maybe it would be helpful to understand manager/owner responsibilities. It seems as though the only reason someone would need to work more than 20 hours, would be to keep track of poorly trained/poorly motivated employees? Payroll, personell mgt., advertising, taxes, acctng, etc. should not take that much time.

If your employees are better sales person than you, a manager/owner, you make more $ not being there but promoting the salon and the specials

thillma, you ask how one owner can own 4-5 locations...its called experience and knowledge oh and not to mention bank roll. If you do not have a larger amount of backing, you will have to work more, especially in the slow season, when money is not pouring in. Yes, if you have highly motivated and trained employees you will not have to be there that often, but they do not get highly motivated and educated by working ont heir own. You will need to be there very actively to train your employees.

Those 4-5 location salon owners probably started with one and built up to the multiple locations. Ask the 4-5 location salon owners how much time they spent in their first salon when they opened and how much time they spend in the background doing promoting, training etc etc. For the ones who are very successful they are probably putting in 40 hours a week even though the customers don't see them.

I don't know about you, but I want to keep an EYE on things. Don't just buy a salon and expect your employees to run it without training and supervision. If you plan to keep your day job and hire somebody to manage the salon good luck to you. Make sure they know what they are doing and are good salespeople. Still, I believe you need to be there to watch over things. It's your investment and this is a seasonal business, and a crowded one at that. Plan on spending at least 30 hours at the salon, minimum.
