I had no salon experience at all other than tanning now and then.i bought my salon blind to the industry i trained for 2 months with the former owner who i now know didnt no crap! i got myself smart trained thru my disty, and read all i can and THIS SITE HELPED A REAL LOT ! i also found very quickly it is harder than it seems if you have alot of common sense and quite frankly balls you can get the training as you go its been 2 years and im looking for another salon or bigger place ive got no regrets GOOD LUCK IT CAN BE DONE

We did a lot of industry research, reading all the info we could come across, I talked with a lot of salon owners around the country. I never worked in a salon prior to opening ours. I have tanned in a lot of salons over the past 20 years and observed a lot. It takes a lot of work to be successful in this industry. As stated previously it is NOT as easy as some think. In addition to some of the things mentioned above, I think "creativity" goes a long way. I never stop thinking of what we can do next. I love what I am doing and will continue to work hard providing our clients with a positive indoor tanning experience.

I work for a couple who opened a salon without having any experience. They solved the problem by hiring me...a manager of 7 years at another salon. I have taken them both to be certified, gone to product knowledge seminars and worked alongside them for over a year. The truth is that without experience you are less prepared to deal with the daily happenings in a tanning salon. You are also less prepared to answer questions for clients that are increasingly more knowledgable themselves. If you chose not to work in a salon ensure that you have an experienced staff and that you have done your homework.

Thank you everyone for the feedback. I will definitely be looking for a job in a tanning salon so I can be hands on about the things that go on in the tanning business. I know that the research will take at least a year to do and probably more....I definitely do not want to walk into this with both eyes closed and wondering exactly what I am going to do. And I will be taking the smart tan certification as well. In fact I know that if I work in a salon first it will be beneficial for me to do so.

Yes, get a business degree, and an electronics repair cert from ITT first and you won't be sorry. Unless you're a realll faaaasssst learner, of course. Good luck.

You don't have to do loads of training, just work in a salon for a couple of months and you will learn a lot (like it isn't as easy as it looks from the outside) listen. read. watch this site.
