reallytangirl,

Your best bet is poke around this site for a while. There is a lot of great advise, facts, information regarding salon startups. The most difficult part is finding a location. Most will try and find a salon for sale. Has both good and bad points. To long to mention here. If you go it yourself, be prepared to have deep pockets for the first 2-3 years. Contruction buildout will get you if you are not familiar with cost estimating. Electrical requirements are a pain in the butt.

Determine what kind of beds you want to use first. The mfgr's rep can point you to a finance company in most cases. We have 3 we use for various needs. Also, determine what bed mix you wish to have. 5 entry 3200 watt beds? 6, 7 10? 2400 watt? 3600 watt? What types of entry beds exist around your proposed area of operation? Any stand up units? Medium laydowns? High pressure? Spray tan booth or air brush? Do other salons have upgrade equipment and what type?

This is the tip of the iceberg. Don't get discourged. It takes a lot of thought, planning and $$$$$. Let's just say from the time my wife had the idea of a salon to finding a location, lease negotiations, buildout, equipment procurement & leases, inventory to opening went from Oct/year 1 to July/year 2, 10 months.

Also, once the place is open and since you know salon operations, now you will entry the realm of business owner and get the priviledge of all the headaches that goes with it. Advertising, employee relations, payroll, purchaing agent, bed technician, etc. etc. Not to mention CC & BW (Chief cook & bottle washer). Yes, you will be the janitor also. lol. Glamourous? Not really. Rewarding? You bet. But there is a price.

This is not to discourge you at all. Go in with your eyes open. Better to be realistic and have a fighting chance to succeed, then file BK in a year.

All the best, good luck and keep us posted.
