Starting Up

I'm sure this has been asked and been answered before, but... How much actual cash is necessary to start up an "average" tanning salon (high to low) excluding any loans or unrealized money. I've had this bug in me to open one and know I have it in me but don't come from a family of business savy folks (pessimists) who have the answers to such questions. Thanks to all who chip in. I accidently I posted this in the "Pro" section before.

100k I wish! I am starting a new salon in October and it looks like I will be at 370k+ I am buying the building for 180k, the tanning beds 100k and mystic 30k, the buildout is 35k and don't forget all those other costs tv, computer,software ,towels,lotions, etc. and I am new to the business so I am sure I am forgeting something. I wish you well!!

Well Tantrum, you are in a great position to actually be able to BUY the building! Most of us pay rent, and thats that. Buying the building was an investment of its own. $100,000 IS enough to start up a smaller salon this time of year (6 Units, 1 Mystic)

The cost of starting up a salon depends on a number of factors:

1) Location of the salon
2) Number and quality of tanning beds
3) Cost of salon buildouts
4) Your credit standing

I've seen salon owners open a salon with less than $100K. Some have spent as much as $350K. If you can borrow the startup costs, **** it won't cost you anything.

A salon depending on the area of the country you’re in will cost you $52 to $68 per square foot to build-out plus equipment and working capitol.

Go to: www.salonsforsale.com

click onto your state and buy pre-owned. Where I am, nice salons can be found for less than 50K. Many salons are closing and for sale. It is not the glorious or money maker business it once was. Major franchises with deep pockets are putting the ma/pops out on the street. Like Blockbuster Video did in the 80's, For any salon to compete you need to invest close to 350K for a complete new start-up..electrical and AC to properly support the beds needed to succeed can cost 50K alone. 10 beds over 100K. In this business, when starting new, you can not skip corners, or you cheat yourself.

If your heart is into it, buy from a desparate owner, so not much of $$ is needed. My advice!
