I've recently taken over a nail/tanning salon which has three tanning beds. The previous owner sold lotion by the cups and charged 3-5 dollars each. There are maybe 4 different types of lotion bottles which are priced at 20-30 dollars. I want to change things up by first doing away with the cups and selling bottled lotion instead and offering packages for sampling. Do you think it is wise to do this in such a small town? Also since this is new to the customer, I don't want to invest too much money in lotion in case it doesn't work out. Which lotions do you feel i should sell (brand) and with which distributor should i go with?

You'll make more money selling the sample cups. With the packettes you're paying for the pretty pouch. But, then again, the packettes are visually more appealing. I sell California Tan (Zoe Girl & Emerald Bay included) and Designer Skin. My lotions range in price from 19.99 to 55.00. From a consumers standpoint, it is more attractive to see a display of 4-6 bottles of each kind of lotion. It makes it look as if it is a popular lotion. No one wants to buy the last bottle (if you just have one of each). It makes them think: "Must be something wrong with that kind." As far as getting stuck with lotion, you can run specials such as 25% off the retail price - you'll still be making a profit, but hopefully be moving the lotion.

Also, with running specials, it may be wise to advertise 3 or 5 tans free with each bottle of lotion purchased. If you are selling a $50 bottle of lotion with 25% off you will lose $12.50. OR if you offer, say 5 free tans (which cost about $0.45 to run each tan) you are only out $2.25 instead. Offering free tans with tanning lotion purchases will earn you more money in the end. But chose which ever sells your lotion more!.....There are some distributors that will take back lotion that you cannot sell, just ask them.
