It all depends on what type of equipment you are putting in. Rule of thumb in my experience for larger units with 160watt lamps, verticals etc. should use 1 ton per unit. For smaller 32 lamp 100watt and below I would personally figure .5 per unit. Its better to go big then small and if you need to add later it can be very expensive.

Sarge - That's in addition to what the 1500 feet would need without the beds isn't it? Here in NC I would need 5 tons just for the space and then additional for the beds.

I also include in my leases that the ac and heat must maintain the space at 72 degrees all year. This puts the ac issue on the shoulders of the landlord.

Yeah, JUST to keep the place cool in the summer REGARDLESS of the beds running you'd need probably 3tons min.

Is it a REQUIREMENT to have A/C? Where is that documented? I know it is necessary but is it tanning law??? Just curious and just learning.

Tanning beds are not even a REQUIREMENT for a tanning salon. More like common sense.
Ha! Good one engfant! Glad to see ur thinkin!

It is good to be a little over what you need. But if you have to much it actually can hurt you . If you have too much, the air inside your salon will get cool very fast , but the system will not stay on long enough to actually take the moisture out if the air. We have a 2 ton and a 4 ton, and 7 beds.

Yes, I have designed many salons for customers and I've always let the AC people determine the AC requirements for the square footage/celings etc. then I have added the AC requirements as I explained above with no problems what so ever.
