Go the franchise route if you like your hands tied. If you decide to get out f the 10 year contract, close up shop, you still are obligated to pay your royalty fees. And the franchise salons I have been out to, know squat about the industry or tanning process.

You become a cookie cutter salon. You are not permitted to express your ideas, sell/market what YOU want, are subjected to reviews and productivity ratings. If you fall behind corporates guidelines, they will remove you from the franchise system, you will still owe $$$$ and have to pay termination fees etc. As I said, "read the fine print"

Wow, HT has their "own" line of lotions...you mean they have private labeled AUSTRALIAN GOLD products. HARDLY worth bragging about.

No, they manufacture their own product. For that matter, they manufacture their own tanning units (UV and Spray) as well.

I don't think so friend. They are CLEARLY AG bottles and PL booths. A blind person can see that.

How about hollywoodtans.com? If you look, you'll see that they use MOSTLY PL products (if you've EVER seen SB/AG bottles they are EXACTLY THE SAME) and their standups are suncapsules EXCEPT their HP standup which they MIGHT have designed themselves.

I also thought I can do alot better on my own and Ive spent the last several months looking into it. What Ive found is that there are currently over 20 privately owned tanning salons for sale in my state. Every privately owned salon I looked at is selling because they are doing HORRIBLY! There seem to be only a few privately owned salons holding their own and those have been around for quite a while.
It seems that the franchises have a model down pat and they follow it to keep a certain level of business flowing. Granted we pay 7% + for royaltees and we pay a bunch through the nose for advertising... I think if they didnt force them to pay for advertising, they probably wouldnt have done advertising on their own. Besides, think about what a TV commercial or Radio commercial does for your name recognition. The royalties pay for the support you get. OTherwise, your kinda at it on your own.
But once again, I only know as much as Ive been exposed to so please show me someone whos opened a privately owned salon in a territory where an HT is and show me how successful that salon is.
Also, do you have a salon jkonturas? If so, what state are you in? How long have you been in business? Is there an HT or other major franchise in your area? How far away? How are you doing this year? How many tanners are coming to your store on a daily basis?
(Im not mocking you so I hope you dont get the wrong idea, Im truly looking for information)
Thanks!

We have HT's and they are non exsistent and not a player.
I think in the market you are in.. they are pretty strong...if not their strongest market? If so, it makes sense if you can piggyback on their advertising and you do not want to be an active owner. Having systems inplace that have already been tested is great.
I have never understood their model...but they must be doing something right they have a ton of them...so who knows?
