Irish, red hair, blue eyes and normally burn first few times out? Sounds like I pegged you pretty close on skin type. Are you normally able to get a base tan? If not, you're leaning towards a skin type 1 and shouldn't tan with UV. Check into Sunless (airbrush or booth such as Mystic). If you can normally get a tan...yes...wait until the pink is gone for the most part (and def if it's painful to the touch). Red skin is damaged skin and someone already burnt/peeling should never be allowed to tan.
Let your skin recover and then go back. While you're there, check the bed. There should be a "Skin Type/Exposure Chart" on it. The salon should be VERY CLOSELY following it. Look at "week 1" and "Skin Type II" (or Light) and your times should be within 10%. If not, ask them to bring the times down to match. You may feel like you're taking longer to tan, but your long term health is worth more than one month of additional tanning $$$.
Edit: And kill the caps lock and use the edit feature. 10 posts in 10 minutes is kinda excessive (nothing but love, not a flame)
