Who likes what? What UVB/UVA output do you like? What would a Ultrabronze 7.0 Plus (100W) produce? I am told a very nice deep tan? I have 2 28 bulb beds to relamp--what about the bulb dropping controversy? And realistically how much should I spend per bulb? I am getting prices from 8.95 to 12.95--I have those Phillips Cleo in the beds now--I don't care for them (they came in the beds) nice tanning but at a slow pace. I just want some input--thanks!

No controversy here...why what did you hear? lol ~ TOP DROPPING most salon owner change their LP units lamps this way. It is self-explanatory. And simply means when they change lamps they throw the lamps on the bottom away. Drop the top lamps to the bottom (the couch) and put new lamps in the top (canopy). This methods works well in base beds. Usually not upgrade units that have different lamps in top and bottom. Also, This type of lamp changing should be done every say... if you meter and Normally change lamps at 20-25% loss...top drop at 10-12% of your meter dropping. Or if you normally get 400-500 hours out of a lamp top drop at 250 hours. This ensures you always have new-newer lamps in the canopy and not going to burn your client’s backsides on the bottom lamps...but still will tan very well. They are simply passed the burn in stage. Some salon owners do this the wrong way...The top drop every 800-1000 hours. This is totally defeating the whole purpose of top dropping~ but saving ching. Customer notice. You might get a few clients that come from other salons complaining they never get any color on their back. That is how you will know the salon they were at, was top dropping the incorrectly. Maybe some were never told exactly how to do this and other chose to Save money on lamp changes. Nevertheless...top dropping can be one way to Keep your clients very happy, when done right. Again as Engfant stated..need more info to help you. Do you have upgrade units? what lamps are in those beds? _________________ Jane... I am changing lamps in my base beds---20 min. beds by Soltech--they have the Phillips Cleo now-low UVB--
I am at a little less than 500 hrs. now. and want to bump up into a bulb that will give my clients color faster and a little darker. I am a very small salon---these are my 2 base beds and I have an upgrade stand up that only has 175 hrs on it. I have 2 more rooms to fill eventually. Thanks for the info. |

Great post MJ. I might follow that next time. I just replaced all bulbs, and like you mention, I can't do this on my upgrade beds because they have different bulbs in the canopy. We just dropped exposure by 25% for ALL tanners and didn't have problems. I was surprised no one complained about reducing their times. They just seemed very happy to have new bulbs.

you shouldn't have to drop anyone's exposure times UNLESS the lamps are of a different "breed" or the lamps were past their drop off limit (say 25%). It doesn't make any sense to lower someone's exposure times.

Since we're talking about bulb replacement, I have a Tan America SunUp II with about 355 hours on the bulbs and about 10 hours on the Facial (just changed them cuz one burned out) How long are the 160 watt bulbs good for? When should I look at replacing them, and what would be the best to replace them with. I have heard that higher B would be better from some of my customers. I also have a Wolf SunDome with about 100 hours on it, and a Mist On sunless booth. Thanks

To say "most" salon owners drop the lamps is just not true. Lamp stacking(as I refer to it) is the poor(or greedy) salon owner's option. For those of you that care about giving your customers a great and EVEN all-over tan, NEVER stack your lamps. My 2 cents...
