Okay, this may sound silly, but is radiation that is emitted from the tanning beds dangerous to a salon worker? Are you only exposed to the radiation if you're in the room of an operating bed, or does it "come through the walls"? I know, I know this sounds crazy. I truly just didn't know. I was just thinking how when the dentist takes X-rays, he steps outside of the examination room - to avoid radiation exposure. Is there any risk with tanning beds?

It's not the same type of radiation as an x-ray machine emits.

You really need to get certified. You will find out that it is not the same.

I should have mentioned that. Definitely get some formal training for indoor tanning.

Yes I agree - this is something you should know. I try to make sure my employees understand the difference also when the subject comes up.

Thank you for answering my question. Which training institute do you feel is most reputable? You can take the test online - right?

SunnyO, this is another reason why all states should be regulated. There are just to many salon owners and employees that don't know some of the basics that are important to the health of the tanning industry. Being certified is one of the most important things you could do right now for your salon.

ok - here's something I'm curious about regarding this question. UV can bounce off water and snow - what about ceilings? Our ceilings are matte but ordinary light bounces around quite a bit - I notice my eyesight has been deteriorating (getting harder to read the fine print) since working the salon. I doubt it's just the computer because I was on the computer a lot prior to opening.
