For metering bulbs, buy UV blocking glasses. TW Tans sells them for about $15. I notice an effect when wearing contacts and checking bulbs, but with UV blocking glasses it doesn't bother my eyes.
For the original question, the technical answer may have been buried for the casual observer. UV Light is just a little higher in frequency than FM radio and normal visible light. The frequency of the emission is too low to do anything, just as standing next to an FM transmitter for weeks would do nothing. A microwave is an incredibly higher frequency and DOES change the matter it comes into contact with. As an example, put food in a microwave and set it for two minutes. The entire object starts to get warm. With a tanning bed, the light is such a low wavelength it's only able to penetrate a few millimeters. This is why the lady falling asleep and frying her liver (in a tanning bed) is an impossibility. In terms of radioactivity, the difference between radiation and radioactivity is that the act of passing across another element changes it's properties. Decades after Chernobyl, walking through a building will expose you to radioactive particles that will cause health issues. Radiation does not do this. Walking into the tanning room AFTER the bed is off will not expose others, just as you tanning, walking past someone does not EXPOSE them to anything (except your pit-odor if you didn't use the deodorant we provide in every room ) All of this is covered in Smart Tan's certification. It's an invaluable course that everyone should attend, IMHO. |
