#1 - If your 5 mile circle does not have enough "potential tanners" for your salon let alone a number of competition do not put one in that area. I am sorry but I do not agree with Carloz on this one. In the Baltimore area a few years ago there were I Can't Believe Its Yogurt's on every corner (at least it seemed that way). Using his math I would have opened a dozen more with this same thinking and when they all went out of business I would be the one crying the blues. You have to have a marketable service for the population around your salon to survive - END OF STORY!
#2 - I agree with MJ's first post. Your competition is there, notice them but do not stress out about it. Our competition has 3 salons around Baltimore and just ran a 11 day of FREE tanning promotion on tv, covers of Pennysavers. Guess what? I drove by the other day when we were busy and they had 2 cars in the lot. In addition 3 of their 11 days have been washed out because of snow. God loves the little guy. SO, know they are there but understand nothing they do short of offering free tanning will effect your salon a few miles away. Your biggest problem is getting the customers and taking care of them.
