I really appreciate everyones input, I have a lot to think about... Everytime I walk into my salon I see all of my belongings and hard work. I feel as though it is my home away from home.Who wants to be disrespected in their own home? I am going to consider all of the advice and hopefully things will get better. Honestly, I really feel like just starting over with having employees. I am tired of begging them to work when they are getting paid 7.50 plus commission. They won't even take out the trash. I am starting to sound pitiful. Keep the advice coming...please.

Do you have an employee manual that has job specifications and salon rules? If not, it is time to get one put together and present it to them. Sometimes with family it is hard to let them know what we expect and they don't take it as seriously as they would any other job. Seems like they think they are doing you a favor to 'babysit' your salon. If, after presenting them with the specifications and rules, they still refuse to comply then it is time to let them go just like you would any other employee. Do it as graciously as possible but do it because by keeping them under these circumstances there will be more hard feelings later than if you let them go now. It is hard but if your gut is telling you it isn't working, then it probably isn't.

A good manual is the key to good management in your salon. When it comes to family, I have been there done that! Unless everyone has the same to gain or lose, then it's not a good idea. That advice is a little too late though. Keep it simple, state the facts and do what you have to do!

Start accepting applications and get someone hired/trained outside of family. Never hire or purchase anything with another family member except for your spouse. IT WILL NOT WORK OUT IN THE LONG HAUL! It never does, no matter how well you get along, that will change once you are paying them. Before we purchased our salon my husband and I agreed that NO FAMILY will be allowed to work in the salon. No matter how tempting it might be or how much you want to help them out, your business will suffer.

I absolutely have employee manuals for both of the girls. It's just paper to them! WE have gone over the manual. I have offered training guides and videos through SmartTan and ITA. I have explained to them how I feel. The bottom line is that I am getting walked on. I am sure that if I cut the hours or start writing out warnings...They will both quit the job.I am darned if I do and darned if I don't...

You need to make decision . Do as you are doing and get the same as you do. or change the way you do things. You are in charge. Ask yourself.. are they good for the well being of the salon.?

Some people make things happen, some watch while things happen, and some wonder 'What happened?'.

Don’t end up wondering. do something.

I put off firing a girl for way too long (she was not family). She stirred up trouble, didn't do her job and was basically a pain in the butt. I tried cutting her hours and talking to her about her performance. She was even stupid enough to call my daughter-in-law to complain about me and my daughter. When I finally decided to fire her, it was a huge relief and not nearly as hard as I thought it would be. She was zapping energy from the salon. She has been gone about a month and things are much better without her. I had to work a few extra hours but have since hired a couple of new people. I realize it being family in your case throws in other issues but you have to take care of you and your investment. Bottom line...it is your butt on the line to make it go. Do what is best for you and your salon!

I employ my father and my brother. For me, I can trust them both with anything. We rarely have arguments or butt heads.
We are Italian though, so maybe Engfant is right.

Hottiestan, you should never have to beg for anyone that is getting paid to do their job. I know it's hard cause they are family and you don't want any hard feelings. The way I see it your sister will always be your sister and if and when you put your foot down and tell it like it is she will need to deal with it, either contribute to being a true employee or move on.

As for your friend, if she is really a true friend she wouldn't put you in this predicament. She needs to respect you that you are in control and this is a salon that is a true business and you are here to make this business successful. You can't have the two of them doing whatever they please or else you'll be the one that will lose all your time & investment in it. Be firm and don't bring any emotions into it when you decide to confront them with the issues.

Remember they have the ability to make a choice either do it your way or hit the highway.
