Sunkissed, I agree. I have been open only a year and a half now. I expected hard times, lots of headaches and losses. But I have often wondered why people who have been in the biz for many years continue to do so if they arent making anything? Every year I am going to compare. If thinks arent looking up by year 5, I will sell. I dont plan on living paycheck to paycheck forever with all these headaches. I made a good living BEFORE opening the salon. Now I hardly get by! I opened the salon because I have always wanted to own my own business. I am going to put my all into it, and if I dont make it, then at least I tried.

Tropicgirl, definitely can relate. I think everyone has the American Dream to be there own boss. Just have to realize that it comes with many sacrifices, long hours and determination even though you may not see the profits of it.
There are many times I've wondered is this worth it? But I do enjoy doing what I'm doing. I love being able to educate clients about tanning and seeing the smiles when they receive results. So it has it's many rewards. I have 1 1/2 years into this and many times feel like throwing the towel in but than, after all the hard work to get here, I think I'll see where it goes. Yes, it comes a time when as Engfant states we need to re-evaluate situation and see where we go from there. As the saying goes, "you have to know when to hold'em and know when to fold'em". I too will reassess my situation this season to see where I go from here. So although many may fail here's a quote from: Winston Churchill who says: Success is going from failure to failure without a loss of enthusiasm! Maybe this might make most of us feel alittle better about the future |

SunnyO, your questions can be answered with more information. With a demographic report and a general area profile. We can establish potential income. To get more specific requires a complete business plan with start up and operating cost. Have you found a space? Have you negotiated your lease or at least established what they are asking?
What size is the space and how many systems are you going to have in your salon. Without these questions and others answered your questions cannot be answered. |

Stick with it eventually you will see some profits but work yourself. Don't hire someone and work another job. We have a total of 6 units computerized with a total of 7 employees and are doing fine. Our base unit 1 mnth is $48.

If you want to be absent its ok but everyone knows no employee will ever work as hard as an owner, that doesn't mean that sometimes you do better working in the business instead of on the business is better. I never well hardley everschedule my self in the store, good systems allow you to work on the biz, and allow your employees to do better job than you sometimes than you. I'm sure youve heard work smarter not harder is always better. If you have no experience then find someone who can help like Steve, personally I have over 16 years so I learned it the old fashion way.

That childcarre business is starting to look pretty good to me, but ole Leo here can't handle those little rug rats. But the money can be good. There is a real shortage of child care in a lot of cities. You can pretty much name your own price. If you have a child care place and can handle 30 kids at $500 per kid. that's $15K per mohth. Rent and utilies can't be that much. You can hire a teenager at $10 bucks and hour and I have a feeling you could make good $$. I say you make money if you don't get too greedy. Tanning is a tough business, but at least I have a full-time job to fall back on.
