I said when I went into business that I was going to give it a worthwhile shot, and my estimate is 3-4 years, if things do not change or at least look a lot brighter in the next year, I will be selling or just shutting down. I will be in my third year this May, according to others who have gone the business route, they say the first 3 years are the hardest. We'll see. I am weighing the options right now about gettin the heck outa Dodge! My husband wants me to give this season a honest effort and then we will talk about closing/sellng. Major headache when you have to be an absent owner.

Absent owner is difficult, at best. You never know who is stealing from you, but you know they are. Who to trust? Who not to.

I've fond that if you want to be successful, you've got to be the one putting the effort into the business first. After it is successful and you have had the same employees there for awhile, you have a better chance of trusting them. You also know what to expect on any given day.

That is what I am facing right now, not so much the stealing, but just not doing their job. I have my back against the wall because you know training someone is not easy to do in short notice, so if I "run her off" I am going to be left without anyone to work that shift. You can't just leave someone there at the register, it's not a convenient store. I have someone coming in tonight to work with me, I am going to start training for the upcoming season.

I do have a great girl working for me, but if I had to I could work the salon all by myself. Of course, I am old and will most likely be asleep half of the day, but as long as the customers don't care, why should I?

sunkissedtan is correct. You have to have a business plan that's a set number of years before you reevaluate your situation. Why do people go into business thinking they are going to be pulling profit immediately? It's not real and NO ONE ever said that it's even possible. ACTUALLY I believe the % of small business that make it to their 5 year mark is like 10%. AS IN the chance of even SURVIVING is slim NEVERMIND cutting a profit.

That is what I have read, if you can make it (survive) for 3-5 years, then you are pretty much in there. I am on the count down. You have to think down the road a little bit.

9 out of 10 small businesses fail the first 5 years,it all comes down to planning and researching the business you are about to build or buy but first you must have a financial plan. The tanning business is a very hard business to be in if you have competition in the same town or city, speaking from experience in hindsight i would never attempt it again. If you are the only one in town there is terrific money in it i sold mine when i was still making 80,000 a year after expenses, but only because i knew there was competition about to build a site in the same vicinity,i recieved my whole start up investment back on the sale and had 6 great years of income, from what i have heard the lady i sold the business to went under in 2 and a half years because of comp
