Please, my place has been here 5 years and people are "just discovering" it now. I advertise in 7 phone books.

Suncountry, check your local laws before you put fliers on cars in parking lots..it is against the law where I live. It will get better. Like others have said, I have been in business for 6 years and still have people 'discovering' us. My hairstylist sends me a bunch of people. Offer to tan him/her for free or trade or reduced costs to spread the word.

Hang in there!!

When you go into resturants leave a free tan card along with your tip. I put my intials on it and also a small note as to where I left it. This helps track what works.

Pay your bills in person? ie, light bill. Leave them a card too!

This year we added some services so I did brochures. I now leave them laying around all over the place. Last week I left one at the drive thru while paying my power bill.... before I got back to the salon (10 mins.) they were calling

ps. Christmas is around the corner. Offer a great special like BOGO. Buy one pkg or product, get the second one 1/2 off. Mix or Match

I don't think it's against the law here to put flyers on cars...as people here do it all the time.

Thanks for all the great ideas everyone!! I really appreciate it. I'll keep you all posted on how it's coming along.

Suncountry: Rent one of those mobile signs with the neon letters - say you're open & advertise some great deal to get folks in to try it. I had one that worked great - 3 tans for $15. These signs are my very best means of advertising - bring in way more people than anything else (besides word of mouth). Even when I don't have one up I get people saying - I saw your sign a while ago...

Depending on your market...run on the top 18-34 radio station with a equal daypart rotation for two weeks....and we have always done well with ADVO.

Well, my husband and I have been busy the past 2 days delivering flyers to homes, businesses and friends/family. We actually had our first response from the flyers tonight and she actually purchased something, not just had her "free" tan and split. I was so happy!!!

Let's hope it keeps coming!!

It'll happen suncountry - it's not the great deluge you hope for right off the bat but it lets you learn slowly - practise your "spiel" etc. It can eat at you though. I had people stopping by constantly - 2-5 per day asking when we were going to be open - the gym kept saying they were going nuts with people asking - even phoning. But they aren't beating down the door now that we're open! But they are coming in - a few more each day. It's early in the season yet and people have to spend money on Christmas too. It really gets going in January when the winter blues and travel plans hit. And when the Christmas bills are paid.

Isn't this so true, it is disheartening to hear "I didn't know you were here".
UGH
