I am going to look at a tanning salon I might invest in.I have never owned a tanning salon before. The owner is not going to be there on this visit, What would you look for in terms of the beds,over-all set-up, power...etc. What would you ask the employees?

hum....seems you have alot to learn.
You do want to know how old the beds are
You want to know the maintence schedule of the beds
Really all determines what your jest is going to be toward the salon, if you are just investing you want to discuss returns and what that will be, and if you dont get your return what are you going to get out of it. Are you going to be silent or tend to the day to day business.

Thanks for the response. You said it, I have to learn alot, but am willing. I plan to be active day to day. I looked through the profit and loss statements, and noticed he has lost money for the last two years, but is showing increases every year, all beds are 3 years old (ets) he has a cleint base of 4900, and some lotion lines. I don't want to be ruthless, but I think I can turn it around if i can buy it as an asset sale and nothing else. I believe he is really motivated to sell. Location is terrible, it is a well known franchise, but can be bought with or without the franchise. I think I will stay away from the franchise, it is not as well known up here in Canada as it is in America. With that said, I am going to visit tomorrow, but the owner cannot make it. I would like to be productive, but have limited knowledge in what to look for, ask etc..

If you have to buy this salon because you need the financing then limit your damage and go for it....if you do not need special financing then open your own salon with your own style and bed style. I do not believe most salon owners have something over you...if you can get financing then believe in your choices and go for it !

Invest in? Do you mean bail the current owner out or purchase the salon. If really interested in doing start your own, partners will drag you under, especially in the slow times.
