I'VE BEEN MANAGING SALONS FOR 6 YEARS AND HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THE PERFECT LOCATION TO OPEN MY OWN. THE PERFECT LOCATION HAS COME, BUT I NEED SOME HELP ESTIMATING MY COSTS. ABOUT HOW MUCH CAN I EXPECT TO SPEND ON BUILDING OUT A 10-12 BED SALON? SHOULD I BUY NEW OR USED BEDS?

Figure at least $1000 per room, 15k for electric. 10k for AC, 100k for beds. Will vary depending on your area.

Just opened up my salon 8 months ago, 9 UV units and a mystic tan. 2300 square feet, and room to expand 3 more units. spent about 150k on remodling (most of it was in the electrical and the hvac.) make sure that when you open, do so with enough money to run your salon for at least 3-6 months. I opened up last year at the end of february, and if i had it to do over again, i would have opened in july or august. instead, i had basically, a trial by fire and was busy and didnt have much time to learn anything. hope this helps.

Find a location that has adequate electrical service and A/C! My build out/remodel costs were about $10,000 to $12,000 back in '98. When you spend 1000's on A/C, do you get to take with you if you move?

I'm trying to open my salon mid-November. Some of my costs are as follows: 8 beds and 1 Super-sonic Sun capsule, $106,000--HVAC, 10 tons, $14,000--electric, 800 amps, 3 phase, $15,000--other build-out costs for materials, computers, software, washer and dryer, furnishings, lighting, and labor will be about $50,000. By the time I'm finished I will have spent close to $200,000. Hope this helps.

All 8 beds better be "super sonic" to justify those costs. I'm talking high end. You won't have enough air for anything big though. You should be estimateing 2-2.5tons per room especially if you are going to invest $100K in 8 tanning beds these things better be nice pieces. 6 20min beds, a VHR, and a Hex is not gunna cut it.

Now. Now.

engfant is merely pointing out that your tanning units costs may be a bit high depending on what you are buying.

Personally I would not rent in a location that does not have adequate or close to adequate A/C and the same goes for electrical service. To some it up , if I had to pay out $200,000.00+ to start a tanning business, with 9 units, I would have given up! You can get a proven fast food franchise for that and make some real money.
