I would like to get a new cash drawer and get rid of the old cash register. Does it make a difference if it is a manual one or is it smart to hook it up to the helios system? also is something like that compatible with helios?

Helios is compatible with electric cash drawers, at one time they used to sell bundled packages with everthing you needed, software and hardware.

And when you tell someone you need a star compatible cash drawer, make sure you tell them which model. My other business is POS equipment, and I know that star has about four different drawer connection schemes depending on whether the printer supports one drawer or two.
Also, a question to Helios users, do you have to use star? I ask because Epson is infinately more reliable... |

I just added the cash drawer to Helios. I already had the printer with a USB connection - this was fine alone but the cash drawer wouldn't work until I upgraded to the very latest Helios (because of the USB) The hardware was very expensive thru ETS but they did tell me what I needed and I bought them locally. For the new salon I've got the Star 500. I really don't recall what the cash drawer was but it cost me $150 CDN vs $295 US from ETS. Exact same cash drawer.

Sweda - I heard from an Epson dealer that they were more reliable but would they say otherwise? The Helios program apparently was also compatible with Epson at one time but they somehow leaned to Star (probably some special deal to sell the equipment at inflated prices). I've had the Star printer for a number of years with absolutely no problems. I think you can make the Epson compatible - something to do with switches - but you'd need help from techies from both companies I think

Well, I've sold a lot of both Star & Epson...My "other" business is POS. I've been installing since 1996, but we just bought the tanning salon next door last month. It's been an adventure, let me tell you
But it's been exciting, and fun, too...to do something different... Anyway, like I said, I've installed both and they both have their advantages...though I honestly get more service calls on Star printers than Epson. It's usually the gear that runs the feed mechanism, or the autocutter. On the other hand, Epsons are prone to having trouble with the mechanism that lifts the ribbon (allowing two-color printing), and a lot of Star printers don't have that feature. Now, if you're talking about thermal (which I install only under diress), I don't think one is any better than the other. I will say that a star printer is easier to cable up, where epson printers require special cable pinouts... |
