Why did you choose tanning,And with the number of salons that are all ready here how do you plan on making it?

I know we are in the Newbies forum, but that was a pretty big question to ask. 6 yrs. later and I'm still asking myself the same thing.

Gary, that is EXACTLY why I went into "the business". Tired of the corporate crap and seeing "professionals" peeing away money on shoddy business practices.
If this place was a gun shop I'd be selling guns instead of tans. I didn't care the business as long as I am in charge (and my business plan showed a potential).
The last place I worked for the OWNER would hit on his employees WHILE aranging his marrage and planning the birth of his child. They were the "biggest corvette dealer in america". He had "25 years experience"

All they were doing was triple financing off lease (worthless) highline vehicles. 1999 Corevette with 50K miles is still worth $50K right? It's easy to get a loan for something when you are "borrowing" the money from YOUR financial lender.

That's professsional? Bouncing paychecks. Not paying for insurance. Making work IMPOSSIBLE so the blame can be placed somewhere. Sounds pretty amateur to me.

Even recently there have been people on this site that claimed 10+ years as a tanning professional and proved they didn't know the first thing about the whole tanning process.

That's scary.

Oh yeah, my previous employer is no longer "in the business". He also used to take us out to eat and pay in change. Quite the charming guy.

I am a newbie with a retail management background that could give you a ton of corporate horror stories. However, I got into this business because my closest competitor is running a salon with cracked acrylics, one boom box, and the worst customer service that you could imagine. I know our community deserves better and I am here to provide just that.

Wait, I wanna add what weezey (god rest her soul) said to my post too. Isn't it GREAT when the place down the street basically SENDS you customers with their nightmare customer service. Saves SO much in terms of money in advertising and your breath in explaining the benefits of your place over the jerks up the street.

"yeah I'm looking for a place to tan OTHER than the one I go to now. Do I have to buy the bottle of love junkie in order to tan here".

"Ahhhhhh THE bottle? Is that what they do at your other salon (like I don't know who they are talking about OR this is the first time this has happened)?"

"yes. they said that I HAVE to buy a lotion or I can't tan. They kept showing love junkie or something"

"You don't have to do ANYTHING you don't want to do here. If you LIKE I'll GIVE you a sample of some lotion that I think will make your tanning a MUCH better experience...(yadda yadda) and then YOU tell me if you'd like to purchase some."

At LEAST once a month I get this.

Isn't the definition of an enterpreneur a person who can't work for someone else?

I thought we might get some intresting stories,But I guess not.I personally had no intention of actually getting into this. I did this to shut up a girl friend, everytime she came back from tanning there was 3 hours tramping about how dirty the salon was. I decided to buy her a bed for christmas and here I am.
