Hi everyone. I'm about to purchase a tanning bed for myself and plan to sell time to friends and acquaintances in the neighborhood. Can I get by with a 16-bulb bed, or do I need to invest in a 24-bulb bed? How much difference is there? The cost difference is about $400 (from $1900 for the 16 to $2300 for the 24). Of course, I'll have to upgrade my electrical system for the 24, so there's another $300. Thanks for your help!

You will probably hate a 16 lamp bed. They tend to tan in stripes. If you are used to tanning in a salon, you will not be happy with this size bed. Most of my clients who purchase beds for their home end up coming back to the salon because they don't get as good color from their home unit. Also, they get tired of friends and family wanting to tan at all hours. Another thing to consider is that if you intend to charge people to use the bed you could be considered a salon and held responsible if they suffer any injury.

16 lamp taning bed is gonna be sooo small, and if you dont mind the extra money, get the bigger one....also, pam is right....you must consider the liability involved with letting other people use your tanning bed, whether they pay or not....

You gotta be kidding!!!!!??????
If you have a garage, double garage would be better, convert it into 3-4 rooms, add some beds. Hang a sign out front, a neon would be nice. THEN YOU COULD REALLY CHEAPEN THE PROFESSIONALISM WE HAVE ALL WORKED SO HARD TO BUILD!!! Why don't you just do it like the rest of us.What an insult you are.. _________________ [ This Message was edited by: soapking on 2004-03-26 06:01 ] |

Thanks for all the replies (except for the one from Soapking, you pathetic little moron). I will definitely reconsider the idea of letting anyone know I've got a tanning bed at my house...I'll just let my tan speak for itself. For Soapking...I happen to live about 15 minutes from a town of any size, and at least an hour from a city that would have a reputable tanning salon, so don't worry about me detracting from your "professionalism"--that's pretty funny, since your message was about as unprofessional as it gets.

Not going to get into an argueing match here......but not only will you be liable if you let others tan you will also need to get the appropriate permits ie. tax id number, sales tax, business permit, salon inspection/permit if required in your state. Seems like you should either use it for personal use or look at opening a bonafide salon.

I think Pale Mama is hoping to do a little under the table dealing. Liablility is one thing - but others are going to ask to use the unit anyway in a small community - why shouldn't she get reimbursed for her power and usage? Sanitization is important. Also consider whether you really want to be bothered by folks coming over all the time and interrupting your day. Unless of course they have pools or hottubs they share out too....

I would suggest, if you feel the demand is there, to buy a few units and start a professional salon instead of being a "backyard" tanner. |

I hate to say it, but he is right....it is an insult to us the professionals to even ask such a question. YOu may want to also check with your homeowners insurance, because you could be asking for more than you know. I would reconsider charging or even allowing anyone else to tan in a home unit, except you the homeowner. But you will probably need to let your insurance company know.
