MJ,
I definitely agree with you--NO FREE TANS. You have to startup with the premise that a free tan isn't going to impress anyone. If you are stealing clients from another salon, that is definitely not going to impress them. On the other hand, if you go after newbies who would benefit from a good tan, then selling them a package is the way to go. Besides, no one is going to get a tan in just one session, expecially from a base tanning maching. You have to educate the client into believe that they will start to see significant results after five or six sessions. You are not going to benefit much from offering a free tan and then leaving then losing the prospect because they thought they were going to see some significant tanning results. Sell packages that's what I say. Free tans take up your time and about 90% of them never signup to tan regularly. If they are serious about getting a tanning then you tell them right off the bat that they have to buy a package. A starter package would work great. $199 to $249 starter packages for base and mid-tanning beds. Based on point values. Then upgrade them to a bigger package that will offer them an opportunity to tan in bigger, high pressure beds. I would also include tanning lotion packets for free, but upgrade them to bronzers, skin lotions and so forth once they get with the program and upgrade to a bigger package. My two bits for this weekend. LEO |

I believe that there are times for free. I also agree that free as well as any new tanner special will bring out the tanner that will try and take advantage of the new tanner special by changing their name and using the special more than once. They may also take advantage of the special with no intention of purchasing any additional tanning. So what! You can't gain a new client until they visit your store, the concept is to have an opportunity to impress the potential new client with what your salon has to offer.
Sometimes that may take giving something away free. I don't personally like first session free, I prefer the one week tanning at a very low rate for new tanners. It gives a longer period of time to build a relationship with a new client. Pricing and specials are very important to the success of your salon. If in the process of building your salon if you have properly structured your pricing and have those prices and packages displayed with very nice signage you will determine the value of your tanning. You use the established value and pricing to create motivating specials. I don't know of any client that is upset about the new tanner specials, particularly when they where a new tanner once. The sale is never made with your advertising; the sale is made in your store. Advertising and what you advertise gives you an opportunity to make the sale by bringing the tanner to the store. If I want to steal one of your clients, I must offer something that can't be passed up no matter how happy they are with you. What they see and how they are treated while in my store will determine if they stay. Be open minded to anything that may increase your ability to increase business. Just a side note, I have had some of my new salons offer a week of free tanning and sell over 300 EFT memberships during that week not to mention the substantial amount of packages and products while the one week tanning promotion is going on. Timing is important. |

You people are crazy......totally devaluing the industry. Why do you seriously feel you need to BRIBE people to tan at YOUR salon. Keep ruining the industry. If you have the need to giv esomething away, give them your 2 min and teach them something valuable about tanning that your competition doesn't.
Also eaze up on the trash talk, shows how classy some of you truly are... |

I think the FREE TAN should be the last resort. If you feel you are loosing the sales pitch, especially to a new to tanning client, offer them one trial - you can't give them the full time anyway because they are probably too white. We do Buy One Get One Free in any bed or booth as an intro because our base beds are $12 per session. Works like a charm and they have to come back for the second tan. Or, if they choose, after or before they tan the first time, they can apply the $12 or so to another package. Also, I find if you remember their name on the second visit, makes them feel special, and if they didn't buy a package the first time, that helps them decide the second visit. I think your staff needs to work really hard at remembering names. It's all about customer service anyway and salon appearance and cleanliness, and making people feel special.

We offer one free tan in level 1 to those referred in by an established client. Individuals who just stop in pay for the visit. If they decide to purchase a package, we offer $5 off the package of their choice. We tell our clients to give out the "Refer-A-Friend" cards to any of interest. If they come in and don't like us, all they are out is a little time. If they do like us, chances are we have a new client. We are confident, once they enter the salon...they become a client. If you are making a positive difference in the industry, all you have to do is get them in the door. They will see the difference and yet...another added to the client base

I thought the Tan Talk Web Page was going to be very useful to me. But all I read is a bunch of garbage going back and forth with people who for some reason can't get along. Know Jesus and Know his compassion and please lets refrain from all of this nonsense.
