Hi there, I'm Michelle. I've been a frequent visitor to the site for advice and whatnot but recently started posting.
I'm sort of a newbie to the Tanning Salon business and have owned my salon for a little over a year. We started slow and I did waste my money on needless advertising methods and unsellable products at first, but quickly learned my lesson.
I believe to compete with the large corporate chains that you must be the best at customer service. I pride myself in talking to my customers and getting to know them individually. I'll ask how their kids are doing or how their business trip went because I know that many of the larger chains don't care about their customers, just the money.
I do some local advertising, although I could probably use help. I put money into Valpak mailings at first but didn't get too much of a response. Print media seems very costly but I've invested some money into it just to get my name out there. One of the biggest suprises was signing up for an online tanning directory. It was cheap so I gave it a shot and was really suprised. I got a bunch of college kids coming in right away and they let me link an e-mail to my listing and I get almost an e-mail a day with people asking questions or asking to set up appointments.
But I'm glad that there is a board like this and I hope to learn more from the experienced owners.
