you need to have a video camera pointing to the register. That is the only way to prosecute the offender. We had this happen to us and because we didn't have a camera with physical proof that the person was stealing (over $10,000!) the prosecuting attorney wouldn't prosecute. We even had the register tapes proving that sales were being rung up and then voided after the customer left the salon!

When I went to the salon that I'm at now my boss was losing probably $20,000 a year in cash and products. Everyone was stealing, I told them I knew and know was the time to stop. They didn't, but I did cut that down to just stealing single visits. I started sending friends in to buy single visits just so I'd know. In Akansas you don't have to give someone a reason for firing them. Took me a whole busy season to weed 8 of them out.Gave reasons like you don't do your share, no hours for you, or hey your just not adjusting to what I need you to do . My people don't steal now. You have to find just 1 good, honest person, and it will spread. I also find the more responsabilty you give someone and being honest and strightforward with them they tend to be more honest. Also when I do find a product missing or I think something is going on with the money, I find a couple of things to lower commission on.
I tell them "hey not only did someone take something from me - but by someone taking something they took potential money from everyone. Employees will help you find the problem when you lower there potential to make money. |

I have sun plus..but I used to have suntouch 7.0
I hope this helps. Go into manager- "access file"( there you can see all transactions)read them closely and then clean house. Make an example of whom ever is doing the stealing. The others If any...will quit or fall in line. Then go to set up - employees - set each employees security settings to NOT allow discounts, voids, overrides etc.... If they have to reset the bed they have to be short and write in on the shift sheet. Then confirm each and every reset shortage in the access file or under reports - business- activity. Now,If you allow your employees to tan for free... Then change all employee packages to charge the normal amount. Should they tan they must sign the shift sheet. and the date. the bed and the amount of minutes. This prevents employees working that shift from claiming the other employees tanned when they did not. Now their shift will be short XX.XX amount of dollars. this is ok..hence the need for the employees who tanned to signed that they actually tanned. Now secondary precuations could be to not allow them access to the sales tracer. Employees steal in three different ways. *During high cash flow perioids...They remove the amount they need at the satrt of the shift..and slowly replace it by not ringing thing up. *Or they steal whatever is left over after the drawer babalnces after not ringing things up all shift. This is controllable but surprise audits. pop in and tell them you have a a meeting with your accountant or something...and change shift for them. If they are unexplainably over or short...fire them on the spot. If they are not....Run a few reports and leave and they will never know the difference. * Or they just constantly hook thier friends up...and never actually physically remove money from your drawer. All are not acceptable. I advise a daily inventory on each shift sheet including each and every sample, bottle, nail savers..what ever you sell. too bad to sad they count or they do not have a job. OHH and BTW while your going thru the access file in manager... A sign that an employee is steal is check the sales tracer tooooooo much. JMHO..based on my experience. After a while you will see the changes you make now will increase your bottom line. Now if they take offense to these new changes...and are hurt because it incinuates "you do not trust them"...GOOD! Trust no one.....but yourself. and definately get a camera...at least a dummie camera. Good luck if you need any more help PM me. |

I use suntouch plus and it has a feature that is "Access File" and this will allow you to see what type of transactions the employee has been into. Also, definitely a cash drawer with XX amount of dollars to start and that's the XX amount you have left after you take out the deposit for the day. Your Sales Tracer will let you know exactly how much was collected.
I review my activity report every morning. Suntouch plus also lets you set security on certain employees as MJ mentioned. I'm the only one that does the inventory so I'm always on top of it and know if something is missing. You can set up all your options accordingly. Last but not least those employees would be OUT OF THERE! I also have T-Max hooked up to all beds and cannot be started unless registered in computer first. Clients cannot start beds from room without computer putting in how minutes they are to go in and which bed/room. So everyone would have to be registered in system with a purchase on a session or package before beds get started. All these activities will show up on activity report even if employee tries to discount or void it!! It will show a no charge and of course this would alert you as to why a free session. |

I think this is such a valuable subject. So many of us learn after the fact and its so aggrivating and hurtful when you do realize you've been played. And then you wonder how long and how many employees. As many of you all, we have coupons out, we had caught an employee discounting to the coupon price and pocketing the cash difference. We assumed our coupons were really the reason for the discount. Same with radio adds that say " say you heard it on xxxx and get $5 off )
or a special price that you are just offering over the radio. You really do not know. This is a great time, esp. before busy season, for all of us to share experiences and help each other beware. I'd love to hear more to make sure I am looking at everything possible too. |
