Tropic is right...about the cash drawer thing..I just a ssumed everyone does that.
You do have a cash drawer of a set amount of money in it don't you?

I keep 150.00 in busy and 100.00 in slow...
The PM shift count at the change of shift I have a calulator that prints....The intial that there is the proper amount of money and the morning girl staples that to her shift sheet. Then she drop all CC reciepts/checks and cash in the safe.
OHH you do have a safe don't you?

I allow the girls to print a sales tracer...you don't have to.

It is sad to think that you can't trust the people behind the desk. I find myself at times wondering if, or who is stealing. I had an episode where 60.00 dollars was missing from the register. I split it among the three girls working that shift that day. Each employee is supposed to count the register when coming on and leaving. I have a ledger that they place the amount in and any deductions. On this particular day 1 employee did as she was told and it took her out of the line of fire....Another employee put down the closing amount at the end of the day. She did not put down what she had when she shift changed. Because I did not know for sure who took the money I made everyone that had their hand in the drawer for the day responsible. I would like to implement an inventory sheet, but I am not really sure what would be the easiest way to start it.

I can see where the coupon deal or radio ads would be a problem if someone was really determined to try and do that. If I have a coupon out there, client needs to bring it in and we put name of client using it and day it was received with employee initials and I have them put in drawer. At end of nite all discount coupons would be with my activity report. This justifies the discount and I see proof of it.
Also, if I do run a special that doesn't require a coupon, I create a category in Suntouch called Specials and I will enter a specific special with the amount and that is what is used to ring up that sale. Once special is over I delete that session or package. If an employee uses my regular single session fee or regular packages than they won't be able to discount it without me noticing it, they would have to justify the reason for cash collection not matching actual charge. Of course, I could see them telling clients it's $5.00(reg price) and enter in as special $3.00 and pocket the $2.00 but this would log in under Sales History for client and if I ever questioned the client say, "I see last time you purchased the special"...client would say, "what special?" And I guess you get the red flag on that employee at that point! Bottom line is to always let employees know that you are on top of things and be consistent. Be aware of what is going on in salon at all times and don't let it slip!!

When I hire I always inform employees that my success will also be their success. And hope we can trust them in running salon without supervision. And that if my company is productive that I as an employer would also like to be able to share that with them. Make them feel a part of the business (stewardship). I hope I never come across an employee that would steal from me. Guess that's where the interview process and listening to good instincts comes in prior to hiring.

i find that playing like your stupid when you first find the problem helps... change the rotation and audtit the register while the girls are not looking... you will find who it is... then cut there hours and start implementng strict shift sheets.. also make sure you check voids... evan 1$ missing is a sighn of bigger things.. the occasional mistake happens... but keep your eyes opean... just got rid of one of my girls.. caught her steeling lotion sales she would not ring up in the computer.. sometimes positive $ is a sighn 2... just my 2 cents..

Never do that!!!!
Taking money out of their checks not only is illegal, but in all cases back fires.

In my 17 years experience in business I have learned that the employee that actually stoled the money will find smarter ways to steal next time. And not only will they get the money back you took out of their check...but they will take more now, because you peeed them off.
In our industry as apposed to a gas station cashier...you do not want your employee to hate you...those negative feelings will translate to bad service. JMHO Service is our industry..right?

I know it you feel vindicated when you take the money back that they stoled..but you pay more in the long run.
In this particular case you were unsure...so you punished all of them. NO!!!
Now you peeed of employees that did not do anything. They will get back at you. Trust me on this. Some might quit, or call off when you reallllllly need them. or you could have just turned an honest employee into a theif that now feel justified in stealling back thier 20 bucks you stoled from them.
You can fix this NOW!! Make ammends with staff members I adviceyou do this or just clean house and start over with new trustworthy employees ...asap.( before they clean your house!!!You know what I mean)

You can however protect yourself for future reference.

When you hire them Hold their "training pay/shirt/key deposit" until they leave your employment.( Create a form in word)
Make it at least 50 -75 bucks. This will infact cover the cost of changing the locks and most shortages should you fire them without notice. They still get their last check. BUT they forfieted their deposit by not following salon policy.
And they sign a paper at the time of hiring giving up their rights to their deposit should they not follow policy.

Is this legal??? Dunno I guess it would depend on your state. But personally I do not give a rats ***. ALL employees must sign it or they do nto work in my salon.

Another thing to withhold is bonuses like commision I pay it every two months now. so should I fire someone or suspect they are stealing I withhold that and fire them for other Policy infrigements.

Even when you KNOW they are stealing even in a small amount...like hooking up a friend. Or a few bucks. I write them up on everything they do wrong. And have a meeting show them the how many different ways the did not follow salon policy.
Then I say now "the worst is yet to come." I show them the proof of their stealing. And/Or the shift sheets they were consitantly short..
Explain that I never found the reason. That leaves two possible reasons.

A. You are incapable of handling this type of responsiblity and are unable to give the correct change.
Since I know your a smart girl..this is not a the answer... right???
They usually agree at this point..but they get progressively nervous.

Or is It??....
B. There is something going on here that is not being said...
Do you have anything to tell me??? Now would be the time.

Then just sit there for a minimum of 3 minutes...Do not speak.. just look at her with a calm interested look on your face.

They have been know to deny it..even after they know they are caught on tape I have two friggen cameras!!.:eyeroll:

Soo now they are waiting for the axe to fall...
I usually show them the tape if I have it..or I ask I wonder what your parents would think if they knew what was going on here?( if they are under 18)
Then I always ask
**"If you were me... what would you do with this situation???"
AND SIT IN SILENCE WAITING FOR A RESPONSE.
after they answer..no matter what the answer is..
If you have absolute proof...ask "so you would not notify the police then?...
This is a criminal offense you know."

Then after torturing them enough....Let them off the hook but tell them because of their actions they are not going to recieve their Key/Shirt deposit back..nor are they going to recieve commision..and they are lucky they are gonna get their last check.
They usually run the **** out in tears...embarrassed and apologizing.(in most cases) I usually feel better. Yes I am an evil b*tch when you pee on me.

I had one girl get up after the first question....and complian I 'm fired anyway so I don't have to listen to you....and start to walk away.
I just calmly and firmly said "If you leave now.... I WILL call your parents and report it to the police..I have a video tape They would love to see....all by the time you make it home." She sat back down real quick.
Good luck all..and protect yourself this busy season if you do not have the shift sheet sheets, daily inventory sheets, the beds hooked up to the pc, and other securities in place...impliment them by the time spring hits..Watch and see your bottom line raise.

OHH and FYI: Mystery shoppers of even the percieved threat of them will also help keep the employees in top form

This will happen to everyone atleast once. I told the girl it was coming out of her check the next time. I do the daily sheets, count the drawer when starting shift and shift ending, my pc shows all transactions including discounts and voids, I check the register receipt, bed time only goes through the pc, inventory is counted evry shift, I do it all. It doesnt matter to me if I like you or not Ive got a business to run. Watch out for you because noone else is going to. I've only been in business a few months now and I cant afford even a 1.00 missing...
