I am writing a business plan for a school assignment on a tanning salon. If any salon owner could answer any of the questions it would be a big help.
1. How big is your salon?
2. What where the start-up costs? (BREAK THEM DOWN i.e. euqpitment, computer systems, building costs, accessories, etc.)

3. How long until you broke even?

(ITS OK TO NOT ANWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS THEY MAY BE TOO PERSONAL)
4. How much do you profit each year?
5.How much do sales increase per quarter?(%)

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!
Alicia

Leesh, I have been in business for over 19 years, I have opened new salons, I have bought existing salons, I have seen just about every trend this industry has gone through and weathered every storm thrown my direction.
As for the information you have requested I would gladely help you write your business plan for say $7500 plus consultation fees. This may sound a little pricey for a struggling college student but think of it as just another variable in the rising cost of higher education. Thanks Lilly White

Cabo - $40-90k for what? Was that all of your start up costs?? Man, I am looking at $200k. I guess that explains why I can't pay a manager $20/hr

If it could be done for $40-90k I would open 20 locations! Heck, $90k will only buy tanning beds. Not to mention buildout and all the other varibles involved.

It all depends on what work you can do yourself also. It can definitely be done for less than 90K. It all depends on where you are, etc.

right now i am putting together a salon in mi. i just recieved a tenative agreement to purchace tanning beds for $180,000.00, and i am still trying to raise $120,000.00 for buildout and deposits on rent, which by the way is $6,500.00 per month. this salon is only 2000 sq.ft. the bed purchace is only for the new beds. i am bringing four used beds from my other salon. so i would say to do it right, and expect a good return on your dollar $300,000.00 would be a good starting point. this salon should do well over $400,000.00 each year if opened in the right location. good luck.

Hi Leesh school is a good thing... I think I can help you with some basics. I have opened many stores in many business all retail. The big thing to remember when starting out is to plan in advance. Here are the major costs of opening a salon 1) store buildout (50-120k depending on how "nice" you wish to make and how much "help" the landlord gives), salon specific electrical (7-30k depending on distances covered and existing power source), other (40k startup lotions, tons of various supplies)... and that brings us to equipment... your biggest cost... if you want to build a moderate fullspread salon expect 12k unit... This model assumes a ton of stuff about the facility as well as payroll, administration, basic systems, etc... all are already a well planned or existing part of the management structure. Good luck with your school project. These numbers are certainly not a secret... it takes very little to figure them out... How much or how little you spend depends more on how experienced the person opening the store is and the scope of your project.
