NEED help determining start up costs!!!!!!!!!!

Hey everyone..wow, I am so glad that I found this site. Finally people who know what they are talking about! I am currently in the process of researching for my business plan. I have wanted to open a tanning salon for quite a while now, and it's time I did something about it. I spend about 4-6 hours a day researching on the net and although there is some great info, it's not what I am looking for. I would like to find out what a general start up cost can be, what capital I should have of my own, what expenses I should look in to and so on. Anyone who has recently opened a tanning salon will know the troubles I am finding with locating this info. Also, are there any magazines out there catering to salon owners???? Anyone can email me if it is easier.

I found a great little business plan that was for a tanning salon. I don't know how accurate it is but it was helpful to me when I was researching. It is at http://www.smallbusinesspoint.com/BusinessPoint/BPPSITECONTENT/BPPCGENERATOR/Tan.pdf.

Thanks guys. The hardest part is determining the start up costs, but it is one of the most important. It will help me decided how long it will take me to open my salon. Your input is more valuable than you will ever know. Anyone else have anything? Maybe even your story on how you got started, costs, loans? Anything? Really appreciate it all!!!

One thing is that you will need to have enough money to get you through a couple of slow seasons. Even though you may have a good season you will still need some extra money for the slow times.

Remember this: What you are making in sales during the peak tanning months will need to be put into savings for the off months! I have been open 5 + years and I still have to watch my pennies.
Of course that is partly my fault. I didn't know much when I bought the salon and it was totally run down. Had to spend spend spend to get it back up to par. But I did over spend too. Didn't look into the future

A good distributor will be able to help alot. I discovered this the hard way by not finding one in the beginning. Now as I get ready to expand, I have found one who not only wants to sell me beds but wants me to succeed. Good Luck. Stick around here and you can learn alot.

dollars needed...honestly...we opened our 2nd salon a year ago...total cost....102000.00 for beds, leasehold improvements....50,000.00, extras like pc, furniture, stock, advertising, etc, 50,000.00....headaches...priceless!!

one thing I recommend is to invest in quality beds, I have two salons and luckily the first one (existing) had very good (Sun/Ergoline) beds and got me off to a good start, and I recently took over a run down salon and remodeled it and installed all new beds and equipment means alot to the clients. I have had many new clients say they would not tan in the old store because of the poor quality equipment, but they heard I put in really good beds. Also I have been to several salons around town and am appauled at the junk you see people using, it is a wonder they can stay in business at all, and gives us all a bad rap.
