I'm a new salon owner in NJ. I was just wondering if anyone had some insight on advetising throughout the slow season. Is it worth it? Or should I wait till the beginning of busy season to spend the bulk of my budget?

First, welcome to TanTalk. I'm glad you decided to join us. I hope you enjoy your visits here.

In answer to your advertising question, I would suggest that you do a search of this website. I know that this particular subject has been discussed at length in the past.

From my perspective, I would suggest not doing much advertising in the slow season. We do very little in the slow season. And, the little that we do is very inexpensive. Consider making arrangements with the apartment complexes in your area. Put flyers out, etc. Small things that only cost you the amount of having the copies made.

Good luck.

Thanks for responding! Do you have any advise on advertising that seems to work well for you? Val-Pak or newspapers?

Cheap flyers, made on your computer if you can. Make copies and distribute to apartment complexes, nail shops, gym, etc. Buddy up to the owners/managers of these places, offering staff discounts. Give free tan cards to hairdressers for themselves and/or their clients. Recruit teens to do the distribution for you, in an exchange for whatever is mutually beneficial for each of you, i.e. free month or lotion or whatever. Barter, barter, barter.

Not sure what your budget is for advertising, especially this time of year. How new are you? How big is your database?

Get your information into hair salons in the area near you. This is a mega gold mine for tanners. We have had excellent success doing the cross marketing barter thing with hair dressers. Find the upscale hair salons, I'm sure you know where they are in your area. These are the ones that have the funds to afford other luxury services like tanning.
