I am new to the tanning business, however not new to the skincare business. I have been on a few sites (message Boards) to get all the information I can. But to be honest I am not sure who is telling the truth and who is not? It also seems like there are a bunch of clicks that a new person comeing on this would never understand. I thought the purpose of this board would be to learn and ask questions. I have just purchased a new shop and did in fact ask some question but got very little response. All I wanted to know is if any one had any last minute advise for this new person just starting out in this business. Like what would you all of done differently if you were starting over?? It seems the only people that get tons of responses are people that are friends of each other. This seems more like instant message then a message board to learn. Please, all I am asking for is help. I go to closing in two days and I am very excited to start my journy but also very scared. Any last minute advise would be welcomed..
Thanks so much.

Never lower your price and set your prices where you can make a comfortable living. Never let your competiton dictate your business...if you have good equipment.

wish you well

Don't get into a price war with your competition.

Carry products that you like. Don't let a distributor or sales person convince you they have the best product on the market. Don't just settle on carrying products from the larger companies. You would be suprised at some of the fabulous products made by the smaller lotion companies.

Get insurance quotes from several different companies. Ask the insurance companies if there is anything you can do to get a discount.

If you are going to have employees, train them well. Have a continuous trainig program.

Sometimes it's easier to do a search to find an answer to a question. If you cannot find your answer that way, please feel free to post your question.

I wish you the best of luck.

One of the first things I would do is get in your data base and send everyone a post card, and give them a special and your intentions.

Thanks again.... I am having a grand opening for two day of free tanning I want then to know that it is under new ownership I am placing an ad as well as sending invitation. I have several companies coming to promote their products. I am in Florida so it is a busy season for us down here. Any suggestion on tanning lotions? I was going with JA, Swedish Beauty, Cal Tan and designer skin. As far as the data base the prior owner has 6,000 with 2,600 active customers she lost some when she started letting things go due to the fact she was selling. The day of the grand opening I am letting old and new customers tan free in any bed that way the can experience all the beds not just limited also I am having contest kind of like a department store promotion. ANy thoughts on that? Thanks again you all.

I thought we answered your last question? Most threads such as this usually get moved to a more appropriate forum. I am 99% sure that your thread got fully answered, simply relocated where it could get the attention it deserves. This forum is kind of our coffee room. We discuss issues that relate to the world of tanning but rarely discussing running one's business in this forum. A topic such as this would EASILY get overlooked. Perhaps your questions regarding opening a new salon would fare better in the Newbies forum or possibly even in the Management forum.

Regardless, welcome to Tantalk. There are no cliques here. We have people who are friends here... some closer than others. But this is where we met. Right here on Tantalk. We have an outstanding team of moderators who convene in the moderator forum and discuss issues that are pertinent to this site. When changes are made or implemented one person acting as a voice for the moderators steps forward. Rarely will you see just one person doing everything around here.

If you have felt ignored, then we apologize. Please keep us updated as the opening gets closer.

I'm so sorry that I landed in the wrong thread. Being new I would have no idea were to go. This doesn't come with instructions. However people have been very kind in sending me private messages to help and those are the ones I will look to for advise. Trust me with all the things going on with starting a business I didn't need a lashing out from who ever you are. I have tried to register on the salon owners one but have not been successful with anyone contacting me to get on this one. Again let me say that I am so sorry for entering the wrong forum. Take care and thanks for your reply.

They will call mazel. Sometimes it may take a few days. But they will verify you soon.

Bronze Star isn't lashing out at you. She is really a great help to all of us. She is just trying to help you understand where to post certain things. All is Good.
