I am in the process of opening a very small tanning salon and was thinking of purchasing some puretan beds but as I was reading through some post I seen that there is regulations that say you can only use puretan bulbs in their beds because that is the only bulbs on their compatability list, and so my concern is that in this economy you never know about a business, so what if Puretan was to go out of business, would you be stuck with beds that because of the compatablity list by Puretan that you can only use their bulbs that you would no longer be able to purchase the correct bulbs for the beds and therefore they would be useless for a business. Does anyone have any advice on this?

Ultimate Tan,
Welcome and thanks for posting on Tantalk.
Thank you for asking an excellent question.
I don't have the "officially correct" answer for you.
Have you presented Puretan with this question?
Maybe the FDA would be a better source.. ??
This may be a good "Ask Don" question.
I will try to get Don on this, in the meantime, does anyone know the answer?

Ultimatetan:

There are two aspects to the sunlamp compatibility conundrum.

1. Regulatory Requirements. As long as a "replacement" sunlamp is within +(-) 10% of the "original" with regards to "performance" (the time to 4.0 MED) it is "compatible" according to FDA regulations. Therefore, you will find that there are a lot of sunlamps compatible with puretan sunbeds, including some manufacturered by Light Sources who makes the PL sunlamps for puretan.

2. Manufacturer Requirements. Many manufacturers ONLY list their PL sunlamps as being compatible in their sunbeds and if you don't use them, you could make "null and void" their warranty and/or product liability insurance. That, of course, is designed to force you to use their sunlamps (no mystery there!). However, you were "worried" about a company going out of business and, if they did, their warranty and product liability insurance wouldn't be worth the paper it was written on anyway.

puretan makes some of the finest sunbeds on the market today (which is why our new salon has them!) and I expect them to be in business for a long time. If they go out of business, I will just "switch" to a compatible Light Sources sunlamp and you could do the same.

I hope this helps.

Don

On the side of my puretan it reads ultraviolet lamps to be used: Puretan s+, Spectratarium R+, Wolff Bellaruim "s". That is 3 different lamps to get compatiable lamps from. I have the list, I have a puretan, go to site and you can down load it.

I just want to thank you all for your informative and knowledgeable posts. This answers my question and helps me to make what I consider to be a very important decision. There is so much more to the tanning industry to learn than most people realize. We are all very lucky to have this site and the knowledgeable and experienced people here that help so many tanning salon owners.

Here are some compatible lamps to Puretan.

Puretan S+: Cosmolux ESP, Wolff Dominion, Voltarc 6.5, Voltarc 5.0, LSI Midday Sun, Philips Advantage.

Puretan Spectralarium R+: LSI Midday Sun Reflector, Philips Advantage R, Cosmolux Esp/R

Puretan Spectralarium Vho/R+: LSI Midday Sun Vho-R, Cosmolux VHR, Cosmolux VHRTT, Philips Advantage Vho R.

You will have no problem finding compatible lamps to the current Puretan lamps made by LSI. However if they should decide to switch lamp makers then all of these are void.
