hey helpful people! we are in the info gathering stages of opeining a salon within the next 8 to 12 months. this site and another are proving to be more help than we could have ever hoped for. we have a dear friend who owns one salon and is expanding to another who is helping us with our research (his market is 400 miles away from us so his help is appreciated but may not be perfect). my questions are this......we need help with the lingo here. if every kind person could respond with just 4 or 5 terms unique to this industry, i think we could learn tons, and maybe the board will have some fun, too. question two: my friend is uses and swears by Sonnen Braune beds, but I have not seen this name mentioned on this board. Any experiences? Last question, I promise: Helios 9 software--good or bad? My friend uses it, but hates it. We need more input and are thrilled by all the help we have found here.

Welcome~ You will find that in our opinion this is the best site for any info you might need regarfing tanning! We have 18 PURETAN units they are the easiest to maintain and require very very little work done. Lamps are easy to change, acrylics are easy to get on and off and overall I think they are the best. I have used Tan America beds and Sun wolf units. As for the lingo questions......Ummmm...Pasty, that is what our employees call someone super white. As you know we would never use these terms in front of a client. Stick Fingers, a client who tends to take the extra toilet paper out of the bathroom or the provided hairspray....LJ, Lotion Junky.... I will have think a bit more on this question... Glad to have you here.

Lotion Junkies don't ya just lovem'..
I get so many more clients from them.
When a clients see another client walk in with a bag full of lotion.. Saying.."hmmm which should I use today?"
That is great it opens the doors to the conversation of switching lotion...
Basic without bronzers, Lotion with bronzers, and then the tingle!!
Ohh never forget your after tan!

The second that client gets in her room..
I have 2-3 other clients (that heard us discussing what lotion she should use today) coming up and asking.. "Should I rotate lotions???"

Ahhhh Gotta Love the LJs

Anybody know how the beds are with Sun Power Source, thinking of buying

(3) 28 Lamp Celebrity LP Beds
(2) 34 Lamp 2 Facials VLR
(1) 56 Lamp 6 Facials VHR
(2) HEX II Reflector stand up w/dressing room

Does this sound like a good mix for a new salon in an area by the beach?

Thanks

I have all Sonnenbraune beds. I love them. They are absolutely wonderful in my opinion. Check in the equipment/lamps forum. Do a search on this site for more information.

Helios - The only thing that I can say is, "Is anyone ever truly happy with their software?" The answer is probably not. I currently use Helios, but am searching for another alternative. Contact the different software companies to get a demo copy of their software. Find what works for you. Suntouch, Breeze, Helios, Sunease, TanTrack, etc.

What kind of equipment does your competition have? What is the population in your area? My reason for saying this is that what kind of equipment you need depends on these factors. In my area, you could never get away with having a 28 lamp bed. Most salons in this area all have 32's as a base.

I do use 28's as my base bed, it works fine for me, but I am not in nearly the same demographics as tangirl. My town is very small and I have only one salon as competition. In fact "upgrading" is new to my customers. They have never heard of such a thing.

I prefer the term "lotion monkey". I was one of those once. Okay, I still am.

Lingo... I can relate after being associated with the military for almost 20 years. It can definately get you confused sometimes.

Lights or bulbs are called LAMPS.
Lotions are called EXCELLERATORS.
Moisturizers are called TAN EXTENDERS.
Goggles, winkease, whatever are called EYE PROTECTION. (or DISPOSABLE EYE PROTECTION)
The conventions are called TRADE SHOWS.
Tannners are referred to as CLIENTS.
When referring to tanning devices they are called TANNING UNITS.
These forums for disuccsions are known as THE TANNING BOARDS.
When a product is found on the internet, beauty supply or other location that is DIVERSION. (A hot issue here.)
Spring is the BUSY SEASON.
Fall/Winter is the SLOW or OFF SEASON.
The stuff you have to save all Spring to carry you through the off season is MONEY!

I know there are a ton more... if I can think of more I will post them.

Oh... and Welcome to Tantalk. Sorry it took me so long to respond.
